Thai News Coverage

Out of interest, can anyone who speaks Thai comment on the coverage the crisis is receiving on the mainstream Thai news channels? Are they aware of the bad worldwide publicity, for example? Do they report it? Or is it simply factual reporting of what IS happening in Bankok without commentary?

The Thai media are very aware of negative worldwide publicity for the nation and they report this aspect, their media isn't as two dimensional as you would expect, they have obvious restrictions akin to those of foreign news media agencies and what we are not at liberty to commentate on on this website.

What is amusing is their head in the sand approach, the country is on it's knees and all of the mainstream channels continue to air these asinine TV shows and keep the news in its usual slots with a couple of news flashes here and there. I think this attitude is more telling than what is actually said in the news when it's on.

the asinine shows are all sponsored and the tv companies are reluctant to suddenly cancel them for fear of upsetting their paymasters.

the news coverage has been pretty poor given the magnitude of what is taking place , on the spot reporters give factual soundbites and the anchormen and their pretty sidekicks hold it all together , but there is little incisive comment or any proper studio interviewing or probing questions put to the big players , they are just asked simple questions as they get out of their cars or walk up the steps to their meetings. nobody dares to fracture the egos or stubborn pride of these big cheeses.
