I have been living in Thailand for six months of the last three years and i am now wishing to stay and work there. For these i know that I must get a work permit and was thinking of teaching English or setting up a business. But do they they require teachers whose mother tongue is english as i am french but speak English fluently ? what is the requirement and if i need to come to study for a diploma in Tailand ? The other option would be to set up a busines, rent a shop and maybe open a restaurant. Could it be possible with an investment of 500 000 bahts and how could I obtain a permit ?  I am just 29 years old and if there is a profession which is highly demanded maybe i could go back studying in the country. I speak fluently English  and my mother tongue is French and hpefully I will speak fluently Thai soon. Hope somebody can help me Thanks

You need to be English or American to have a job as a qualified teacher.

Forget investing in bars, restaurants. You will lose everything.

Deposit your money in the bank, or have fun with it. Don't waste it.

I agree with lenno about investing in bars, etc.  However, not only Americans and English can teach here.  There are Philippinos teaching here as well, not to mention Aussies, etc.

hi'

I do agree whith what was said, keep your money and enjoy the life here, half a million is far to be enough to "begin" to think about mounting any kind of business ...

and teaching ... well, if a 8,000 baths/month fits you, go on <!--emo&:)-->smile.gif<!--endemo-->'><!--endemo-->

seriously, I'm not english native, but like you,my english is fluent, as my thai begins to be, I'm leaving here for a few years already, and never found any "good" opportunity to build anything around that won't go back to thai people ...

I'm in between staying here and going back to my "old" place,

because of visa's hassling, problem for working and so on ...

anyway, don't give up on anything you have in your own place.

but, anyway, good luck <!--emo&:)-->smile.gif<!--endemo-->'><!--endemo-->

Frenchie,

One thing you might consider is attending a university or post graduate course in Thailand as a student.  There are many programs here and ity might help you to make contacts for business.  A number of courses are at night or on weekends or both, which allows time for you to work.  If you want more information on these email me directly with your educational background, i.e., high school diploma, bachelor's degree, etc.
