By-election tests support for Thaksin

SAKON NAKHON : The popularity of Thaksin Shinawatra and his former power-broker Newin Chidchob will be tested as the Puea Thai Party and its key rival Bhum Jai Thai Party contest a key by-election today. The outcome will shape the future of the two parties in the Northeast, a traditional stronghold of Thaksin which also has the most seats in general elections.

Puea Thai Party, the successor to Thaksin's People Power Party, is fielding Anurak Boonson in the seat after her husband Pongsak was disqualified by the Election Commission and the Supreme Court for poll fraud. Bhum Jai Thai Party candidate Pitak Chansri is running on the government's achievements.

Campaigning for the vote was marred by two bomb attacks yesterday in Charoen Sin district. One explosion near a campaign stage of Mrs Anurak in Lumpini Wan temple damaged walls and shook 200 people gathered to hear her speech. As Bhum Jai Thai attempts to make inroads against Thaksin's support base, Mr Pitak has received valuable backing from Chumpot Boonyai, a Puea Thai Party MP in the province who has announced his decision to defect to Bhum Jai Thai.

The result of the by-election could set off a rush of such party defections, with whichever party winning likely to pick up new MPs from the losing party.

Two bombs explode in lead-up to by-election

Two bombs exploded yesterday as campaigning intensified for a by-election in Sakon Nakhon today between rival candidates from the Puea Thai and Bhum Jai Thai Parties. The two bombs exploded near a Puea Thai Party candidate's campaign stage in Charoen Sin district.

Police Major Chamlong Thapsikaew of Charoen Sin station said the first bomb exploded off a community road leading to Ban Khok Sila Moo 1. The bomb caused no injuries or damage. The explosion took place near the campaign stage of Anurak Boonson at Lumpini Wan temple. It damaged the temple's wall and terrified about 200 people who had gathered to hear Mrs Anurak's speech, which was subsequently cancelled.

The second bomb went off in an adjacent village, Ban Khok Sila Moo 8. The Election Commission (EC) expects a high turnout in today's Constituency 3 by-election. Sakon Nakhon Election Director Salwit Namkhoet expects the turnout to reach 70% in the five districts, which have 234,303 eligible voters. Puea Thai Party is fielding Mrs Anurak after her husband Pongsak was red-carded by the EC.

Puea Thai Party Leader wants to step down

Puea Thai Party Leader Yongyuth Wichaidit plans to step down so that his Party could be revamped and better prepared to fight back against the government.

In an exclusive interview to The Nation, Yongyuth admitted his Party now needs to be completely overhauled to prevent it from sinking further.

The most important aspect of the restructuring should be to change the executive board, Yongyuth said, adding he had made preparations to submit his resignation.

Yongyuth decided to step down after calls by certain PTP MPs asking him and Party Secretary-General Sunee Luengwichit to resign because both of them were not MPs.

Yongyuth admitted that he is not qualified to lead the PTP now that it is the main opposition party. He said the Party Leader needs to be an MP so that he can perform as the Opposition Leader. He added that the Party Leader needs to have enough political influence, which he also lacks.

"I've tried to resign three times already, but I was asked to hang on because of legal technicalities," Yongyuth said.

BANGKOK, 21 June 2009 (NNT) - Former People Power Party Deputy Leader Sompong Amornwiwat [PPP Banned # 6] believes Major-General Manoonkrit Roopkhachorn would possibly work with the Party, but is unlikely to become the new Leader.

In response to the report that Maj. Gen. Manoonkrit was approached by some prominent figures of Puea Thai Party to Lead the Party, Sompong said he had never heard such scandals within the party.

For his personal views, he stated that Maj. Gen. Manoonkrit was more likely to merely work with the Party like Gen. Panlop Pinmanee, not to be a Leader.

In the same way, Puea Thai Party Deputy Spokesperson Suchart Lainam-ngen claimed that the Party was not now looking for the new Party Leader.

He indicated that the choosing of the new head would take place only in the case the House was dissolved.

Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Denies Inviting Ex-Democrat MP to Be Party Leader

The Pheu Thai Party Spokeman denied rumours that his Party has invited an ex-Democrat party-list MP to be the Pheu Thai Party Leader.

Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit insisted that Yongyuth Wichaidit remains the Leader of Pheu Thai Party and his Party has no plan to reorganize party's structure until a dissolution of the Parliament takes place.

He noted that his Party has not invited Major-General Manoonkrit Roobkajorn, a former Democrat party-list MP, to be the Pheu Thai Party Leader.

Prompong said Major-General Manoonkrit is capable, but the consideration will be made in the meeting of Party's members.

Prime Minister Abhisit stated he is not concerned about this issue because Manoonkrit has already resigned from the Democrat Party, which he has the right to do.

Democrat Spokesman Buranat Samutharak expressed confidence, saying that he believes Major-General Manoonkrit will not reveal Democrat's strategy and the party has nothing to conceal because it works transparently.

Meanwhile, General Panlop Pinmanee, a Pheu Thai Party member and the classmate of Manoonkrit at the military academy, revealed that he has asked Major-General Manoonkrit about the news and Manoonkrit said he has not been invited to be the Pheu Thai Party Leader yet, but he is ready to do his best if Pheu Thai Party accepts him.

Pheu Thai Party expels 2 MPs for pledging support for Bhum Jai Thai Party

The Pheu Thai Party Thursday resolved to expel two of its MPs for having announced they would join the Bhum Jai Thai Party and having taken part in political activities of the Party.

Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit said the Party resolved to expel Saraburi MP Porapol Adireksarn and Sakhon Nakhon MP Jumpoj Boonyai.

The two have earlier declared they would switch to the Bhum Jai Thai Party before the next election and they also took part in the Bhum Jai Thai Party seminar in Sakhon Nakhon over the weekend.

Losing the membership of the party, the two MPs could also lose their parliamentary status.

However, they can appeal against the expulsion with the Criminal Court in 60 days. If the court rules that the expulsion is unlawful, the two can join a new Party without losing their MP status.

But if the court rules that the expulsion is lawful, the two will lose their MP status.

The Pheu Thai Party is planning to fire two Party MPs who have not resigned from the Party but are planning to defect to join the Bhum Jai Thai Party.

Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit said the Party would summons Sakhon Nakhon MP Chumpol Bunyai and Saraburi MP Porapol Adireksarn.

It wanted clarification of their actions after the Party's disciplinary and ethical committee resolved the two broke the Party's regulation number 49 for joining political activities of other parties, violating Article 106 (7).

Pheu Thai's move to reunite with Snoh

Pracharaj Party Leader Snoh Thienthong is likely to return to the Pheu Thai Party's fold, main opposition Party Deputy Leader Apiwan Wiriyachai said on Wednesday.

"Snoh will reunite with Pheu Thai although his new position will be determined later on by the Party Executive Board," Apiwan said, conceding he acted as the go-between to broker the deal.

Snoh, known as the kingmaker, was one of the founders of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party and helped to install ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra in power. The two parted way following the outbreak of the turmoil over Thaksin's leadership.

Apiwan said he carried his task alone to convince Snoh, denying speculation that the Shinawatra family had involvement in the deal.

The PTP and the majority red leadership are totally about power and not ideals. It is about returning power to Thaksin and/or fronts and those who side with Thaksin ( I see the worm has turned again with a quick return of Snoh). Power game. Manoonkrit brings some or all of class seven. If it serves the purpose bring him on is the plan...... who cares about his lack of democratic credentials after all Thaksin demonstrated his own lack of them.

In Thailand democracy is still at the stage of you vote us in and then we do what we want regardless of laws etc and we dont need no chaecks and balances. Quite simple really. Any idea that a check or balance could be brought in that politcos couldnt overcome is not allowed.

It will be a while before Thailand has a democracy where elections are free and fair and accepted by all and at the saame time chaeck and balance mechanisms are truly independent of politcal interference and can do their jobs unhindered and with resultse accepted by all. For now let the vicious self serving power games continue.

The land was then developed into a luxury housing development and golf course.

Thaksin bought the golf course in 1999 for 500 million baht.

Sanoh wavers on joining Puea Thai

Sanoh Thienthong, the Pracharaj Party Leader, confirmed on Wednesday he had been approached to join the Puea Thai Party, but said he was still undecided. Sanoh said since Puea Thai Party derives from the Thai Rak Thai Party which he co-founded, he understood that it may well want the support of a senior person like himself.

But it was a delicate matter, he said. Sanoh said former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the de facto leader of Puea Thai Pary, had not contacted him on the telephone about changing parties.

Col Apiwan Wiriyachai, a leading Puea Thai Party member, admitted the Party had approached Sanoh to take a "suitable position", but not the job of Party Leader. They believed the Pracharaj Party Leader could consolidate the Puea Thai Party. He personally believed that Sanoh would not be adverse to joining Puea Thai Party and that he would be acceptable to most Party members.

He declined to comment when asked about Chalerm Yoobamrung's opposition to Sanoh as Party Leader. Thaksin's other sister and former First Lady Yaowapa Wongsawat (along with her daughter PTP MP Chinchinna and her sister Yingluck), who thinks that while it's ok if they attend Red Rallies together, she doesn't like the idea of Yingluck being PTP Leader and thinks it's wrong.

BANGKOK, 1 July 2009 (NNT) - General Chaiyasit Shinawatra disagreed with naming Yingluck Shinawatra as a new Leader of the Puea Thai Party, saying she possessed inadequate experience in politics.

Gen. Chaiyasit, who was a former Army Chief and is a cousin of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, expressed disagreement with Puea Thai Party prominent figure, Chalerm Yoobamrung’s stance supporting Yingluck as the new Puea Thai Party Leader.

He said it was not a suitable period for Thaksin’s youngest sister to become the party head at this time as she still had insufficient experience in terms of politics. However, he claimed that he did not know how the ideas of Yingluck and Thaksin on the issue were, citing that he rarely talked to the two figures.

On the other hand, Air Chief Marshal Sumet Pomanee, a senior officer in the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Defense who was a close friend of Thaksin at the Armed Forces Preparatory School, voiced the possibility of the issue.

He said Yingluck had been studying the operations within Puea Thai Party and recently helped the Party’s election candidate in Sisaket province which then resulted in the Party’s victory. Nonetheless, he indicated that Thaksin had not yet made a decision on the matter.

Sanoh, a man without dignity. Not long ago he climbed onto the PAD stage to denounce Thaksin, and who remembers his bitterness when after ensuring Thaksin was elected he was offered no post, so Thaksin offered him an honorary one . What was the post, I forget now?

Pheu Thai Party Holds Seminar in Chiang Mai

A seminar held by the opposition Pheu Thai Party in Chiang Mai saw a number of noted participants. The seminar aimed to serve as a forum for discussions on the Party's policies ahead of the next election.

Pheu Thai Party executives and members, businessmen, and academics flocked to the Party's seminar today at Pornping Tower Hotel in Chiang Mai province.

Members of the Shinawatra family, including Yaowapa Wongsawat and Yingluk and Payap Shinawatra, were also present.

Pheu Thai Party Deputy Leader Plodprasop Suratsawadee stated that a series of seminars will be held across the country from now, in which the public can participate and address issues to the Party. The Party then will tailor its policies based on the public's needs.

The policy-making process is expected to be completed in the next two months.

Meanwhile, Mingkwan Saengsuwan, who leads the Party's economic team, said at the moment, Thailand needs a government which has a good roster of experts to deal with economic problems. He also criticized the way the present government incurs more debts by seeking loans to finance the economic stimulus program.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Olarn Chaiprawat spoke during the seminar that the government should follow footsteps of such countries as the United States, China, and South Korea, which have successfully fought their ways out of the economic gloom over recent years.

Pheu Thai Party MP for Chiang Mai Surapong Towichakchaikul said that he is going to visit ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

He added that he has prepared a cigar box made of mahogany as a gift for Thaksin's birthday.

He told the press that they can leave questions for Thaksin with him.

btw, any further discussion of the Party removing the violent thug elements from their Red Shirt organization? They are, after all, in Chiang Mai, which is home to some of the worst of the lot in form of that LCM51 group (to borrow an acronym for them from hammered). Or were those just empty murmurings of such after the tide of public opinion went against the debacle just a couple of days ago in Chiang Mai at the hospital?

btw II, isn't the head of the "economic team", Mingkwan, the same guy who was disqualified from his Cabinet position over economic dishonesty? I suppose that's what he meant when he mentioned having a "good roster of experts".

btw III, should perhaps Olarn check with Americans, for example, to see if the have, indeed, "successfully fought their way out of the economic gloom"??? Is he yet another on the "good roster of experts"?

Former TRT and PPP executives join in seminar to prepare Puea Thai Party for "political hiccups"

BANGKOK, 11 July 2009 (NNT)-Former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat hosted a political seminar yesterday which was attended by Puea Thai Party MPs as well as former executives from defunct parties such as the Thai Rak Thai and the People's Power Parties.

Somchai hosted a seminar and banquet at his home in the Summit Green Valley compound yesterday.

Participants in the event included included former executive member of the Thai Rak Thai Party Yaowapa Wongsawat and members of the now defunct People's Power Party such as Sompong Amornwiwat, Tossaporn Serirak and Yingluk Shinawatra - sister of fugitive ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Members of the press were also invited to the event.

Somchai stated that the seminar was organized to prepare the Puea Thai Party for any possible political hiccups.

Somchai also expressed confidence that the Party is ready for the next general elections.

The Puea Thai Party has made plans today to meet with agriculturalists and SME business operators to collect input and listen to grievances in order to form new Party policies.

Well with the asset seizure case approaching rapidly we can be sure the family are plotting a few hiccups along the way. Every time a Thaksin case has come to court a hiccup has occurred and this is a fairly big one.

Puea Thai Party wants Thaksin to be Chief Adviser

Puea Thai Party will invite ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra to be Chief Adviser, PTP MP Surapong Towijakchaikul said Saturday. It will also invite former acting Leader of the dissolved People Power Party Jaturon Chaisaeng, Pongthep Thepkanchana, and Sudarat Keyuraphan to be party advisers. Surapong added that Thaksin will also appear in cut-outs, posters, and leaflets posing with party candidates contesting in the next election.

MP: Thaksin will return

PM Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would return to Thailand to fight all legal cases, run for election in Chiang Mai province and take the leadership post of the Puea Thai Party, a Chiang Mai MP claimed on Thursday.

Surapong Towichakchaikul said Thaksin told him this during his recent visit to see the fugitive former prime minister in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. The MP said Thaksin had formerly said he would wash his hands of politics but had changed his mind because the people wanted him to return to solve the country's problems.

He said Thaksin would certainly return, but not this year. If Thaksin came back before an election was called, Surapong said he would resign to make way for him to run in
