Hey , when in Rome do as the Romans do , now maybe you can appreciate the absolute stupidity of 'The Thai way' , those people were emulating the THAI WAY of doing things , DO YOU GET THE PICTURE ? Your defensive attitude is absolutely assinine , you point out the Thai way of driving and ridicule it , LOOK IN THE MIRROR .

I think jetsetbkk was trying to throw in a learning curve for protective idiots such as yourself , show the end result of stupidity in driving the way Thai do . :o

Wow, talk about missing the point completely! Where are the pics of non-Thais driving dangerously? Why aren't they posted up here for public ridicule and mockery?

Care to post some? Nah, I didn't think so. Oh, and by the way STOP SHOUTING, IT DOESN'T MAKE YOUR POINT ANY MORE CONVINCING!

At least the first four letters of your username are accurate, you farking moron.

You sir are way out in left field , non thai are in an absolute minority , you care to prove your particular point so much , post some pictures , you so dumb you are unable to do this yourself to attempt to prove your silly point of view . I realy do not care what names you call me , I only get upset when I am called late for lunch .Bad driving by foriegners most probably account for less than .001% of the horendous death toll on the roads in Thailand , yes you intelligent , inane individual , lots of photos would sure help your campaigne to show foriegners in a bad light , please spend your time in a more intellectual manner , get a life .

Pictures posted are not intended to ridicule or mock , merely to show the ineptitude of Thai driving as it happens on a day to day basis , keep up the good work of defense and watch thousands more die from illogical stupidity , maybe that is what you are realy into , blood and gore , oh you wretch !!!!!!!!!

How much are tuk-tuks to buy? I know they are not particulary safe and probably not that economical, but they would make a better mode of transport for a family and/or goods of some kind. Maybe the people who make them could sell a modified kind to the public.

These are the Before...can we post the After pictures aswell?

I wasn't thinking of that - just the funny pics of too many people on a bike or, my favourite, silly sam lors, e.g the "double-decker":

and the "poodle perambulator":

I can only feel empathy with this young couple. OK they drive not safety and may they not even realize it. But at least they go shopping with their child to buy fan and not leave it at home.

Maybe 3 helmet are very expensive for them and maybe the same for the safety seat.

You can see then thousands of situations like that all over the country. Regretable yes, but what can they do. Not everybody is able to buy a car.

The sam law rate for anywhere around Surin town is Bht 20.00. Those fans are around Bht 650.00 each.

As far as I can determine, they are breaking five "laws". Driving without helmets*, three people on a 2 seater motorbike, overloading the vehicle, dangerous driving, and driving without lights. Poverty is no excuse and neither is ignorance.

*The fine in Surin for driving without a helmet is Bht 200 - 300. A helmet (albeit completely useless) can cost as little as Bht 150.

BTW, I took the pictures.

Cheers

It's not ideal, and isn't available over every square kilometer of Thailand..... but...

Thank you, I specifically pointed out the safer option after riding sam law (transliteration is such a fun game...:o ) in Surin myself. I do recognize, as stated, they aren't everywhere... but huge areas are provided coverage.

My personal record for catching on camera - Five-up:

TV059.jpg

[siem Reap, Cambodia, 2006]

When I snap one with seven-up I'm going to sell it to PepsiCo for their next advertising campaign.

Not close to some of the things I've seen though... :o

nice shot... by adding a basket up front, they coulda made 6.

btw, my own observed max 5 involved just such a basket scenario... looked to be about a 3 or 4 year old wedged into the basket with his little legs dangling over. I had to stop my own bike for a <deleted> breather after witnessing that one.

At least the child is sitting between the parents. In this neck of the jungle, it's not unusual to see the child standing on the seat, arms around the driver's neck with the other parent behind. The most I've ever seen on a bike is 6: father driving with child wedged between him and the front, another child wedged behind the father, then the mother behind that child with one small child in each arm. The Dodge Caravan of Thailand.

Not trying to one-up you, but I once saw 7 on a bike. The real fun part was seeing them actually positioning themselves to get everybody on. It was 7 teenage boys with a guitar and a very small amplifier. Two of them were standing and sort of leaning out for balance - these were the guys holding the guitar and amp. It was hilarious and looked like a circus act. The guys knew what a spectacle they were making and were killing themselves laughing as they slowly drove away. Unfortunately, I was just relaxing at the beach when it happened and didn't have my camera with me.

Ya, thanks. That's pretty close to what I saw.

Yeah, let's all take random pictures of people in developing countries and post them up for internet ridicule, for bonus fun we can take pictures after they have accidents or suffer disfiguring diseases and mock them further -- that'll be farking hilarious!

Go to rotten.com if you get your jollies like that, we don't need it here.

For what it's worth I saw a family of three overweight Caucasians on a scooter in Naiharn, Phuket this morning. The father and mother were so fat that the daughter, who I'd guess was about 11 years old, was sliding off the back of the bike and desperately clinging on to her mother. The father was riding his scooter down the middle of the road in heavy traffic and nobody was wearing a helmet.

But yeah, this is a Thai thing. Right?

Nope it's a 'dumb' thing... The Thai's that ride overloaded scooters one handed without a helmet whilst talking on their 'mobile' or holding a child are doing so because they don't know any better.. Their Govt has failed to educate them regarding road safety and their police force has failed to inforce the laws of the road.. However 'farangs' of all nationalities have no excuse.. Even in Eastern Europe helmets are compulsory and road rules are enforced... Only thing worse than a poorly educated Thai endangering him/herself and their child is a 'dumb' farang who think's it's fun or cool to emulate them cos they are in Thailand... Welcome to the 'Land of Smiles' please leave your brain and your common sense at the immigration booth... :o Funny how quick the smiles will disapear when you get knocked off your bike without a helmet...

And as for all the liberals moaning about peoples 'rights' :D:D:wai: Maybe if more pictures of idiocy on scooters were published on the net the Thai Govt might be shamed into doing something about it..

After all the Songkran Road toll seems to be causing embarassment... They are gonna ban alcohol sales :D:D

Posted

And on another subject.. Why do we make excuses for this idiocy ? Like 'you don't know their circmstances', 'They can't afford a car' <deleted> ?

Millions of people in the Western World were unable to afford a car during my Fathers/Grandfathers generation.. What did they do ? Walk, took a bus or asked a friend for help.. They didn't try to squeeze three people and two boxes on grandad's bicycle... Why ? because they knew it was 1. Dangerous. And 2. Illegal.. In a country like Thailand where there are thousands of Songtaew's and Samlors for rent cheaply plus a huge public bus system there is simply no excuse.. Oh ! They can't afford it ... BS ! If they can afford a scooter, a child and two fans they can afford 30 -50 or 100 baht for transport...

can believe how many apologists and rationalisers there are :o

I believe a new one would be Bht 100,000 upwards (3 times the price of a cheap scooter).
