I know the fine is only 200 to 400bt if caught for speeding but it's just a pain having to slow down after caught as the wife is going on about speeding again. You should take a long hard look at yourself....YOU are speeding for what, endagering the lives of not only the people in your car but all the other innocent motorists. Havent you been told that those extra few kilometres per hour you are travelling at might make the difference between stopping and not stopping in an emergency situation? Boksida Posted February 21, 2009 Share Posted February 21, 2009 I have been using a radar detector for 15+ years now and it has saved me a little bit of money and a lot of inconvenience. I haven't upgraded for years and have noticed lately that it does not detect the new tripod mounted radar guns that are being deployed even though my detector is supposed to find two different types of radar and laser. Now I pass traffic police in the left lane, going over the limit, and I've never been stopped. I doubt the price of a new unit would pay for itself in many years. No big fines, no points on your driver's license, no increased insurance premiums, etc. Be aware; don't kill people. But a radar detector in Thailand! Nah. Panic, Panic everywhere. 55 Miles a hour? i couldn't living in a country like this. I speed many times on Bang Na Elevated Tollway, speially in the night when is not much traffc. I use to drive easy a 180km/h. Now we know there are Radar Traps. so actually i not see the reason to pay the Tollway Fee, whe i can't drive faster than under the Tollway. In Europe i had a scanner for listening the frequenciy Police comunication, because Radar dedectors aren't allowed in some countrys. Anyway this was 20 years ago, but the scanner saved me a lot of money. Never got caught. Allways drove quite fast, but only if no traffic, no rain and the condition of the road was ok. Have to use common sense wher and when you cna drive fast. Overhere in Thailand, i don't know if a radar dedector is against the law and i don't know where to buy. But i would buy one if it works. With a bit of luck you only kill yourself. Som nam na when it happens. I can't find anything where somebody has pointed out that radar detectors are illegal in Thailand. I have often shown mine to police when they have made a bogus claim of using radar detection. It always becomes a big joke and I get congratulated on getting a good one on them. Chiang Mai to Lamphang claims they are using radar and I've been pulled over twice but the detector never uttered a single beep. It's more of a game isn't it? Certainly not worth the investment. I'm getting someone to bring one back for me from the U.S. I was recommended 2 popular brands "Cobra" and "Beltronics" but I don't know if it'll even work with Thailand's police bands. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience. I did get caught speeding at (only) about 146km on the Changwattana tollway. I normally don't go over 120km, but I was taking my dog to the vet for an emergency operation, but the police told me that he didn't care cuz it was "only a dog". Man I was pissed...wanted to uppercut him and drop kick his a_s! ...anyway that's a different story... So my point is that it not only cost me 400bt but my license was suspended for 7 days and points taken off my record. When I visited the police station 7 days later, they explained to me that according to Thailand's law, you get 100 points per year on your driver's license which will be deducted off your record if you commit a "serious offense", including speeding and running a red light. There are 2 ways you can get your license revoked: 1) if you exceed 100 pt within that year; 2) if you commit the same serious offense within the same year (yeah this one surprised me too)!!! eg. if you get caught speeding twice, your license will get revoked! So what'll happen is they'll take your license away and force you to take a safety driving course. Afterward you can then apply for a new license. The Thai laws are getting tougher, which is good actually cuz that probably means corruption is down. About two months ago, I got a ticket for running a red light. It was a really busy intersection, when the lights turned red there were still cars in the middle of the intersection, so I figured I'd just go along with the traffic. Me and two other cars were pulled over right after we got through the lights. But this time when I went to pay the fine at the station, I BS my story and asked him to reduce and fine and not take points away. And he agreed! So just be nice to them and they'll help you. I think that this is one of the worst places in Thailand that a person could drive that fast. No need for the cops to use radar. I've heard stories of how they calculate the time stamp on the magnetic card to discover the driver's average speed for the trip.
