Thailand May Seek To Extradite Thaksin: Pm

george

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else find the timing of this announcement suspect.

Not at all.

He is due to speak in Hong Kong on monday, and so the PM says to the Press that extradition may be sought.

It is saying to him...

"Just be careful what you say on that day"

Typically, extradition requests are not initiated via the Press but by other channels. This is a warning shot.

I think that is the worst thing they can do. Get this piece of shit back here to spend a few months in a luxury cell (ha!) and then free to stir up all kinds of shit and whining about injustice. Thailand will fall into anarchy if this scumbag ever gets near the place.

These words look like they are coming from a very disgruntled little man - think you might have been happy joining the yellow shirt mob on their path of destruction last year - you should stand up with Sonthi and scream foul - wonder why you not protest the fact that they are wanted by the law for treason, destuction of property etc, etc, etc, etc, - the reality is that Taksin had this country in better standing interntionally and a much better financial position and what it is now - and seems that the PM and his deputy cant even agree on the matter of trying to get him back here --

Not sure about Aussimike's size but he has every right to be disgruntled and so should everyone else. We're talking about bringing to book a monster - an instigator of how many thounsands of extra judicially killed Thais? Was it two thousand plus or five thousand plus? We'll never really know! What we do know is that Thaksin is a crime against humanity and it should never ever be forgotten! As for the comment that Thaksin put the country into better standing internationally I would have point out that his sterling reputation is why he is an honourary president of Man City football club! Oh, sorry, they stripped him of that for the shame that he bought to football!

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your perspective, the Thai government from the top down and a significant majority of common people both thai and farang and both long term inhabitants and visitors are corrupt in one form or another. Despite the lip service by the government about ending corruption, corrupt practices are socially acceptable because it makes the rich richer and the poor must worry about feeding themselves and their families therefore don't make the time to worry about the future beyond tomorrow. It is a "catch 22" situation and will remain so until Thailand and it's government become more transparent to the world. Most if not all third world countries experience this dilema as part of the growing process. Unfortunately, the common people of Thailand, who are mostly poor have little to no control or motivation to move Thailand forward to becoming a competitive country in the global economy. With no middle class to function as the political and social watchdog for Thailand, only prominent and influential names will change, nothing else. Thailand has always tried to grow itself internaly which is no longer viable in a global economy.

PM Thaksin was a valuable asset toward moving Thailand forward to becoming competitive in a global economy. Not because he is above corruption but because he is a "limelight seeker". He does not need more money, although he will continue to grab it legally and/or illegally since the practice is a habit and even part of the fabric of Thai culture, but because more important to him is to have his name recognizable on a global level. This is the first step toward transparency. With more transparency comes closer scrutiny. With closer scrutiny comes internal change for the better or a fall into total oblivian. But, as long as Thaksin is the PM who seeks "limelight" the move for Thailand will be forward.

Thanksin did more for Thailand than any other PM here. Don't believe the hype the new government has fed you.

Oh really... what hype is that? As far as I know, the new government have been very careful not to point any fingers. Thaksin's criminal conviction had nothing to do with Abhisit or the Democrats. He brought it all on himself. He was greedy.

I do know about some hype - namely the common knowledge rumours, which I absolutely believe, that were spinning around when he was in power: I think he is an evil little man with no sense of duty whatsoever. His attempts to make the poorer richer were actually a trap to make them poorer in the long term (which is why there are so many repossessed properties - especially in Udon Thani and surrounding areas - on the banks' Web sites) through overbearing amounts of credit. Much like the British system.

(I am no fan of democracy by the way, especially in a country where the framework of democracy - metered corruption, reasonable education, reasonable spread of wealth - hasn't even been addressed. Hey, at least I'm honest.)

Thaksin was without doubt a very clever PM and many of his policies were good ideas. But does that give him the right the rape the country? I think not.

And now we have fools like Chalerm, Jatuporn from Kwarm Phid Wan-ni and, surprisingly, some clearly misinformed farangs on Thaivisa going on about how Abhisit wasn't democratically elected, how he's a puppet, how he's incompetent. Come on... the whole world is messed up, Thailand moreso because it has been politically screwed since the 2006 coup... what are you expecting, another property boom?

What's more, what are these people complaining about? Thailand has a leader who is actually qualified to do the job - PPE at Oxford, plenty of experience as opposition leader - it's been a while since we've seen that! He does have his faults - like his age, which wouldn't matter outside Thailand - but I'd prefer him to a murdering, corrupt, lying, convicted megalomaniac anyday. The scary thing is I'd take the megalomaniac over morons like Samak, Somchai and Chalerm too.

I still can't believe Chalerm is still in politics. Just goes to show the "Bangkok Elite" aren't all on one side as the BBC etc suggests.

Pi Sek - hats off to you! Couldn't have put it better. This posting should be required reading by all on this topic!

Does anyone else find the timing of this announcement suspect. The coup guys sent lawyers to England, nine of them, to work on Thaksin's extradition. As far as we know they are still there. Now the current prime minister and his PAD liaison, the foreign minister, are making similar noises which I would consider 'saber rattling' if the PM had ever served in the military. Because of the much delayed and venue changing 14th ASEAN summit the PM needs to make a statement declaring a strong position on the matter.

Abhisit is simply a puppet for the military and without military support his government would collapse sooner rather than later this year. The PM has done nothing but streamline and rename populist giveaways from the deposed PM's government. On the plus side, the appointed PM does have great English language skills. Enjoy!

So could YOU remember how to spell all their names properly?... Not I.

So yes I did 'selectively' paste SOME names.

The ones I have heard specifics on, read on, and know I have had

conversations about with Thai friends. If you look at the names it is

NOT a complete list, and thus cyphers and others are not there.

Everything is going against Thaksin. His money is disappearing fast. Thaksin's personal wealth is now down to around US$200 million, having lost badly in his investments amid the meltdown of the global financial markets. A chunk of his wealth is also frozen by the UK authorities.

Recently, he flew to New Zealand to meet Banaphot Damapong, the step-brother of his ex-wife Pojaman Damapong. Thaksin told Banaphot to give him $500 million. Banaphot called Pojaman up. She relayed the message back that since she and Thaksin had already separated, Thaksin should not ask for any more money from her.

Pojaman is now keeping her steely heart steady. The divorce is real. She has cut her ties to her former husband and no longer gets involved in politics. She hopes to win a tax evasion case against her and to continue to live a quiet life.

I find this hysterically funny. Although the sums of money involved do not reach such astronomical heights as in this case, a lot of farangs will have a sense of deja vu. No doubt he now feels betrayed by his ex - nothing new there then.

I have never thought that Thaksin was particularly bright and felt that 'she who does the ironing' was the brains (puppet mistress?) behind him. The female of a species is all too often deadlier than the male. Look where most of the money ended up; most of it with her and her family. Belatedly, she realised that there were lessons to be learnt from history i.e. eventually despots usually come to a sticky end, and she decided to get off the merry-go-round while she still could. Thaksin couldn't even read the writing on the wall and is now isolated in cloud cuckoo land.

Given the probable financial status of the two parties and their expectations of the future, it is reasonable to suppose that the offspring of their union will stick close to Mummy's side, particularly if there is a scintilla of truth in the rumours of Thaksin's romantic waywardness. I remember Thaksin complaining that he was so busy running the country (read feathering his own nest), that he didn't have time to go home and give the unlovely Potjaman one - or several. The probable truth ex Dear Leader, is that she was screwing you all the time.

"Pork barreling" may have ended 20 years ago, but it is still there.

Only, now it is done in a more sophisticated way.

Just like a Thai political party offering free condoms to everyone who vote for them.

Do you really believe that any politician in the world is doing his job without trying to fill his own pockets?

If you do, you are the most naive person I ever met.

In my country, pork barreling happens every election and also months before the election.

Visit some politician on the election list and ask him to get a government job, a loan which under normal circumstances would be impossible, or what ever and buy a membership for his political party.

Anything you ask will be carried out depending on the money you want to donate to his political party.

Thaksin might or might not be guilty for the crimes he supposed to have commited.

But Absint and his croonies from the yellow T-shirts (PAD leaders) are not exactly angels who have never done something wrong.

"He who has never done wrong, cast the first stone."

It is to Absint to show that he is really meaning what he pretends to be and show to everybody in the world that he will start clean his own frontdoor by throwing all the PAD leaders in jail for holding an entire country ransom for almost 1 year.

Untill that happens, he is nothing else than a suck puppet for the military in the eyes of many people.

Do you see me for what I am?

This a fight between with no pretensions to any form of honesty

and those with that at least has improving honesty in government

as one of their long term goals.

Institutionalizing graft ongoing, and profiteering on a grand scale, as in the past,

vs

at least attempting to limit it and install some working checks and balances,

and working gradually towards a more honest form of governance.

Which is the better goal?

There has NEVER been an Thai government, including Thaksin's,

that could stand without the support of the Thai military.

So that argument is moot also.

There are no angels,

but there are a few with more altruistic aims

and a more long term view of the country's needs.

PPP never appeared to include any of these long term patriotic thinkers and movers.

Here we have the standard argument from the pro Thaksin brigade. Presented on so many threads by so many posters it's become their manifesto.

1. Vigourously protest that they do not, in fact, love Thaksin.

2. Claim to be stating facts, without offering any evidence for them.

3. Tell us all to "wait and see". Abhisit will mess up this and fall on that. In 5 years time, should Abhisit still be in power, the beginnings of a real democracy well rooted and the country flourishing, these same people will be on here saying "just you wait, it will happen."

The real facts are: Abhisit is the legal PM. His government has made a good start given the global situation and the fact that they've only been in power for 2 months. Thaksin was found guilty and convicted. Any impartial court of law in any country would have made the same decision. The old "he did good for the poor" argument is a myth based on the flawed 30 baht health scheme and his handing out taxpayers money.
