hey guys i have just got a new modem for the TRUE hi speed internet connection 256 k and they say you can take it home until we get you a new line by next week.. Can i use this modem with my normal landline TOT phone line ? Please suggest how to use it .. thanks

No, it's a ADSL modem. You probably even can't use it with a TOT broadband connection.

It looks like you got to wait a couple of days to enjoy your TRUELY amazing broadband.

And get those forms ready to upgrade ....

The 256/128 is not really that more faster than a dialup. Also, if you're in the 'wrong area' your connection might look like a dialup.

I don't want to spoil your fun ..... fork out and get a 2560/512 for 1150 baht per month.

My apologies.

I am curious how you got to that page.

I can access it via the url you gave, but cannot find it navigating from the TRUE home page.

It is a pity TRUE does not reach this neck of the woods.

I would live to see a 2M, 3M or 4M link really working here in Thailand.

I have just upgraded my TOT line to 512K and it shows a true speed of 27.7Kb/s,

which is dial up speed.

I wonder if TRUE can really deliver those high speeds?

Hi psychosid10

Some figures for you..

When I was in an apartment with a PABX system: downloads were max 2.8kbs (dial-up)

When I moved and got a direct line from true: downloads averaged about 5 - 6kbs (dial-up)

With True adsl 256/128 I get 20 - 30 kbs for downloads

These are actual download speeds not connection speeds

Astral,

1 - http://www.truecorp.co.th / change to English

2 - Products/Services Menu -> Internet - Hi-Speed Internet

3 - More detail (right top)

4 - Promotion -> Promotion details

There you are ..

Psycho,

It's impossible to give you realistic download/upload figures. It all depends on the area where you are in.

I myself, am in zipcode 10400 (the same as Melus I think). I am on a 2560/512 connection.

Although the speeds are far from that, I can watch streaming video at 300/500 kbs and get download speeds (with Download Accelerator) to upto 250+ kbytes.

I am very happy with my connection. I don't look at the testing results on different sites, they make you frustrated. But as the 'needle' in my modem speed dialog often hits the 2560 mark (after 2am) True delivers what they have promised me.

I guess your downloads will be around 15-20Kbytes at the day time. A little higher after 2am.

The first thing to remember is that these speeds are absolute maximums,

256kilobits/sec download, 128kilobits/sec upload.

They are reduced by contention, which means the number of people sharing the line with you.

That is why sniffdog gets his full speed after 2am. Everyone else has gone to bed.

I get better speed in the early morning for the same sort of reason.

TOT quotes 1:20, I do not know what True offers.

It depends on how much you use the internet, but putting costs into perspective:

I used to pay around 300 baht a month in phone calls to the internet.

My "all I could use" subscription cost me 450 a month.

My TOT 1Mb adls link costs 1000 baht + vat, not a big increase.

The same sums work for TRUE.

Start at 256/128 and see how it goes.

You can upgrade to faster speed later if you need to.

Mind you, True does have some nasty catches.

1. Tied for year - does that mean speed as well?

2. 2000 baht penalty if you don't buy their modem!! That is naughty.

3. Limited to one computer. (I have a desktop, a notebook and another machine for my children.)

1:50 I believe.

That's the only reasonable comparison you can make. I also paid around

THB 750 per month for dial up. Now it's 1150 baht. A bargain because even

the worse throughput is many times superior than dialup.

1 - No you're not tied for speed. You can always up- or downgrade at the end

of month.

2 The penalty is not for not buying the modem. The connection costs are probably calculated on a 1 year contract. If you get out earlier, you pay a compensation.

3 Many people have routers. You use routers to connect more computers to one point so I guess this is not valid anymore.
