Tot Broadband Speed

I started on the slowest offering of TOT 256/128K

I did a speed check.

The result was 145Kbits/sec, with the comment "Mediocre"

Yesterday I asked for an upgrade to 1Meg, and was told it would be done on Friday.

It had been done this morning, but only changed to 512K.............Duh?

I did the speed check again and it shows 27.7Kbits/sec.

Yes I did mean the decimal point!! Comment "Very Slow".

I am connected at 512K and can see that speed, on my DUMeter display", when downloading mail in Thailand.

On international links it is a figment of someone's imagination.

I will be back to the TOT office shortly to ask for the 1 meg link again,

and let you know once it it up.

The apologised and entered the new speed on the computer.

It was connected by the time I got home!! Impressive service.

The speed test show 112.5Kb/s, only a 10th of the rated speed.

What a pity TRUE does not reach this neck of the woods, with its 2M, 3M and 4M links. Wow.

You probably get the same feeling again.

The advantages of the high speed packages of TRUE (2.5, 3, 4) is that they can reach higher peak speeds.

For normal surfing and small downloads the (lower) speeds don't differ match. I doesn't matter if you're on 256/512 or any other speed.

And stop testing your speed .... they are highly unreliable. And realize that you only pay a low fee (the 1150 baht I am paying is a bargain).

Correct me if I am wrong, but a 1 meg link is measure in bytes right? whereas your download speed is measured in bits?

8 bits to a byte. Multiply 112.5Kbits by 8 will give you 900 Kilobytes.

Nearly running at optimum by my calculations.

Or am I completely off the mark here?

The speeds that TOT and TRUE quote are BITs/second

1Mbits/sec or 1024Kbits/sec is 128kBytes/sec max.

On the 256kbit link I saw 27kBytes peaks,

with the 1Mbit link I am seeing 48kBytes/second on file download.

What does IPstar offer?

So, Astral, am I reading this correctly that you actually got the highest speed when you were on the 'slowest' connection?

I think I know where I will start: At the 500 baht rock bottom option. When I get the advertized speed then I will consider upgrading. :o

Cheers,

Chanchao

Based on the speed test you are right.

However it is rather like buying an amplifier for a good hi-fi system, you buy a powerful unit to cope with the peaks.

It is called "head room".

When I downloaded my mail today it was almost hitting the 1 Mb limit, but downloading the IPStar file

that TukyLeith has suggested it looks as though IPStar is on a dial up line!

A steady 28kb.

I agree, start on the slowest and upgrade later if you feel the need, from my experience the

upgrade is very easy. Just ask TOT and when you lose connection change your logon

to silver (512) or Gold (1Mb).

I got a new TOT silver package. Just made a test and this are the results:

Communications 144 kilobits per second

Storage 17.6 kilobytes per second

1MB file download 58.3 seconds

Which fairly reflects the usual download times.

We live near the Kasetsart University.
