I can't think of anything for "gurp" with the same vowel as the two before it. My guess is that you're hearing เกือบ (guab) [ADV] nearly; almost; shortly; closely

C S S maybe correct that you are hearing เกือบ (keuap) meaning: nearly or almost but from your transcription "gurp"or "gerp" my guess is that you are hearing the coarse Isaan/Lao word for shoes or sandals. I can't find it in any dictionary but I think it is spelt in Thai something like เกิบ or กึบ.

Ahh, yes. That's true. It could very well be the Isaan/Lao word for shoe, which is spelled เกิบ or ເກຶບ, same vowel as the OP´s other words. Thanks Groongthep.

This word is also used in Northern Thai, at least by the older generations.

Cool, for the situations I may have head it said, it was more likely to have been -nearly or almost- but thats cool to learn about that too.

Small correction: the correct Lao is ເກີບ, not ເກຶບ, if I'm not mistaken.
