English->thai News Translations Sources?

Hi all,

I'm trying to work on my skills translating English->Thai and am wondering whether anyone has a good source of foreign news articles translated into Thai? I'm thinking of Reuters, AP, or something similar. I'd like to do my translation of each article and then take a look at how someone else (a Thai native speaker) handled the same English source.

For clarity, I'm overseas and therefore only have sporadic access to Thai newspapers, magazines, etc. I'm really hoping for web-based sources.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure whether any of these articles are actually translations as the content on the Eng/Thai homepages is different. But it might be worth looking here.

Thanks for the idea, Withnail. I've been taking a look to see if I can find the same article in both Thai and English.

Top of the featured articles on the Thai homepage is a story about paper made from wombat poo in Australia. The corresponding article wasn't too hard to find in English: there's only one story in recent days about wombats! Strangely, though, the two stories start out the same but then diverge after a paragraph or two, with each version containing points not contained in the other.

Next, I looked at an article about an environmental organisation called Green Seal. Again, easy to find article in both languages. This time, the first paragraph is mostly the same, with a little paraphrasing in Thai, and the rest is completely different. The Thai version is about 20% of the length of the English original. It's at this point I realised that the VOA website is probably mostly intended to support the audio downloads of the radio segments. Also, since the broadcasts have to be interesting to listen to, there is likely to be a large degree of localisation in the content and presentation of stories.

This kind of loose rephrasing can still be useful (for example, if I'm translating an article about a 'shooting spree' I will be able to find out how the event is described in the Thai version) but I'm really looking stricter translations at this stage.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I may end up visiting Thai VOA in future anyway for the stories and podcasts. Plus I now know about wombat poo paper.

Google Translate can be used to either translate text or the whole WEB pages into English from a number of languages. You can either copy and paste text or open a site in the translated language.

Other functions include:

A Dictionary.

Tools to add an instant translate button for your browser (thus enabling you to translate a page into English with a click of a button).

Site address is:

http://translate.google.com/?hl=en

Tried it on Thai news WEB site and it translated it to English, it may miss on some of the syntax but it certainly enables a page to be readable for a foreign language.

http://www.sealang.net/lab/justread has quite some articles from Bangkok Post translated sentence by sentence, and nicely lined up. You've got to scroll to about the middle of the list of topics to find them. The articles are not the newest (2000-2006), and it seems they picked easier topics, but nevertheless this may be what you've been looking for.

cheers

Very good source. Exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for at this stage. Many thanks.
