I get this every time I go to BBC Prime or update the page when searching through the listings:

ie58hc.jpg

I have to click OK every time.

Is there an option in Firefox or Internet Options to prevent this?

Well I'm defo not a tech expert but I'm sure it means you need to update your version of Internet Explorer, I'm sure you can find a free download for that on the web somewhere, just get the latest version, I've got 6. something and I think thats the latest.

Hope thuis helps :o

Thanks Shola. I'm actually using a different web browser - not IE, but Firefox.

I'm there right now with Firefox 1.0 and I'm not having this problem. I don't know what it could be, but maybe its in your firefox settings?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/channels/bbcprime.shtml

This the right URL? (I've tried a few pages inside the site too)

Thanks cdnvic - the URL is http://www.bbcprime.com/asia/default.aspx

Hope you can take a look and see what happens to your installation. I too am using Firefox 1.0, but with a lot of extensions :o . I'm sure it is something in my firefox setup, but can't find it.

I am getting the same message RDN - although my icons are not as sexy as yours!! :o

I thinks it's a case of some sites simply don't work in Firefox - that's why I keep IE installed - it happens on the odd site now & then.

The site works fine once you get that annoying MS bootlicking box out of the way. BBC always seems to do this. I remember 10 years ago there was flash on every page of the BBC main website back when few comps had, or can handle shockwave.

I'd bitch at the BBC about it. Try sending it to the world service radio program as they read them on air.

All I can see you being able to do is click that box out of the way everytime. Its a shame BBC is being so exclusive. :o

I'm not getting the message using Firefox 1.0 at http://www.bbcprime.com/asia/default.aspx. Try installing the Java Plug-in. Here's the link - http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.  My guess is that the message you're getting is trying to tell you you need java - and it isn't detecting which browser you're using.

Its once you pick a country and click past that page that the MSwhore box pops up.

Check that. I only get the message when I select Asian countries from the drop-down list at the initial page. Perhaps a joke they're playing on us Asian bumpkins?

I'm running 1.0 and the message does come up. I think it's just a design flaw in the site in that it checks specifically for IE... And the site works fine otherwise, so I wouldn't worry about it. For sure Firefox;s java engine runs things just as well as IE.

I am getting the same message with Opera on the BBC Prime site, but I ignore it and continue quite happily.

This does not work with my bank, where I have to use IE6.

Using FireFox 1.0 with the latest Java installed and I do not see the box nor have any problems. Recommend that youre install FF 1.0 and the latest Java located at http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp That should fix it.

It's lazy programming on behalf of the website. They are checking that you have the right version of IE to ensure that their site works. However, it may work fine with Firefix, but they haven't bothered to check for it.

But with FF, there is always a solution:

https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extension...x&id=59&vid=617

It allows you (via the tools menu) to change the way your brower reports itself to a website. e.g. I have firefox, but websites think that it is IE6.0

Thank you spog, you have jolted my memory.

I did that tweak a while back and thats why I don't get the box showing.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs - what a knowledgable lot you are! :D

But the prize for the simplest - and most useful - fix must go to spog:

I installed the extension, tweaked it to pretend i'm using IE 6 :o and the annoying box stopped appearing. Cheers to spog!

Had to chuckle at Thetyim, though, because I've done exactly the same in the past - fixed a problem and then forgot how I did it!

Thanks again all :D

It's very simple. The page is written in Microsoft ASP (hence the .aspx extension). Some parts of the javascript code are targeted for IE and won't run without modification on other browsers.

There used to be a time where you have different behaviours for different version of Netscape and IE. It has been more standarized now although differences still occur.
