Emirates airline has announced an increase in its free baggage allowance for passengers effective for all tickets issued on or after May 4.

The new allowance, implemented across the airline's network of more than 100 destinations globally, is – 30kg for Economy Class passengers, 40kg for Business and 50kg for First Class.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates' Divisional Senior VP, Revenue Optimisation, said: "We has moved to these new free baggage levels to further demonstrate our commitment to putting the passenger first."

Gold and Silver members of Skywards – Emirates' frequent flyer programme – are entitled to an additional baggage allowance over their ticketed allowance – 16kg for Gold members and 12 kg for Silver. Codeshare passengers travelling on Emirates-operated flights are also eligible for the baggage allowances.

But it will be some time before I travel Emirates again on the Bamgkok route. Those 747-300 series with 10 seats across instead of 9 just increases that sardine feeling. Sitting in the aisle means massive bruising to shoulders as you are knocked-around that much, and the ICE system entertainment boxes under the seats restrict leg comfort.

I have defected to Singapore Airlines who have dramatically slashed London-BKK fares now and if you time it right go on the new A380 Super-Plane.

Mate, I don't know how long ago you flew EK but they don't own any 747-300s or 400s. 777 and A340 long haul only in their fleet.

Most are 20 kgs I believe, for the extra - don't know because it outrageously expensive if my memory serves me right.

As a Silver Skywards member it now means I have a baggage allowance of 42kg......

my understanding it wasn't the luggage weight that caused this, investigations are ongoing but preliminary findings are showing it had to do with too many fat aussies in the rear of the plane.

that's great news but i booked my emirates flight to London a few months ago and it say 20kg on the ticket. do you think they will allow 30kg now? i'd call but they are on a long weekend holiday.

When I checked Emirates excess (accompanied) luggage charge LHW to BKK about 4 years ago I was quoted 32 GBP a kilo!! I doubt if many people would be prepared to pay that. Better to dump all those jars of Marmite.

my wife's packing for the trip to the UK this week. when she heard about the extra 10kg/bag she ran straight down the market to load up on bpaalaa, khee boo and all kind of other discussing Thai necessities. the sniffer dogs are going to love her.

Are you an encyclopaedia salesman or just technophobic? get one on CD or DVD and you can pile other <deleted> in your case such as toiletries and clothing then you may actually find it refreshing to take a shower and change clothing instead of reading your encyclopaedias. I also prefer to sit in a seat on an Aircraft as sitting in the aisle gets in peoples way.

Thanks for the feedback. These are not 'Britannia' style encyclopedias, like most people I have those on my laptop. They are encylopedias of specialised knowledge not available on disc (yet).

Aisle air travel need not be agonising except on Emirates 777-300 where they have 3-4-3 seating instead of 3-3-3 seating. The aisle is just the width of a food trolley compared to 1 & 1/2 food trolley on other airlines, plus the seat widths are just 14 inches so your shoulders stick out.
