I'm now looking at the loss of some 300GB of data that I can seriously do without saying goodbye to. Can anyone recommend someone in CM who might be able to recover the data from the drive? If you do ever manage to get your data back, can I suggest a site like www.myotherdrive.com where you can store and access large amounts of data for a very small monthly fee (Free if you only need their free allowance) David (300gb . . . that's a LOT of porn!) mmcsusnret Posted May 27, 2009 Share Posted May 27, 2009 (edited) Depending on the type of ext. hard drive, and it receiving damage in a fall, the damage could possibly be to the case and components that support the hard drive vice to the hard drive itself. If that is the case open you can open the plastic case and use cables to hook it up to your motherboard (or have a computer shop do it) and see if you can access the drive. I had this happen to me before and it worked fine as the damage was to a printed circuit board inside the plastic case, the actual HDD was not damaged. this one used a USB connection to the computer and the way it landed forced the cable plug inwards to damage the circuit board that changes the style of connection from USB to the flat ribbon cable type of plug (unsure of the name of the type of plug. (Or at least make a competent attempt at doing so.)Cheers yes. i do recommend "mtek computer". owner is thai, khun kasem, he speaks english. they do notebook repair & recovery --- yes, sometimes they do apple-notebooks too he studied engineering. i know him since ab 5 years. if there's a decent computer technician in chiang mai --- it's him. shop is not far away from central kad suan kaew. there are these 2 main it shopping-malls on outer side of moat... i've been there too often so i forgot name..., "computer plaza"? there's a mini-entrance to the left directly behind 2nd store. there's a bakery on corner, "s&p", i'd guess but i'm not sure. if u enter..., u'll have "computer plaza" car park to left. to the right it's that bakery shop..., 1, 2, 3 more shops... & there it is "mtek computer". he's good. indeed. it maybe he'll not be able to fix it... but he'll try. he'll try the ways a decent computer engineering hardware guy will do. my 0,02bht Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Bananaman Posted May 27, 2009 Author Share Posted May 27, 2009 I've tried the data recovery software route but it was useless - the drive won't even mount so there's a definite physical issue. I've also toyed with the idea of cracking it open myself and having a go but the case is entirely sealed and I'm kinda worried about doing further damage in the process. The annoying thing is that it's still under warranty, so I could in fact get a new one (provided I didn't mention it's suicidal jump from the table), however, they (Seagate) would take the old drive off me and trash it along with all my data, so that's hardly a desirable course of action. I'm out of town right now but arrive back next week, so on Commons' advice, I reckon I'll give MTEK a try. If anybody else has other recommendations, please post. elektrified Posted May 27, 2009 Share Posted May 27, 2009 (edited) True data recovery (if that is in fact what you need) is extremely expensive and mostly a large corporation that has lost important data would go to this expense. If you lost some Mp3's and DVD's that you downloaded on the Internet, then move on. True data recovery is done by trained specialists at companies who do only this and is tedious and time consuming. I remember once trying to recover some important data that was the automation for the mixing console which we were using for the sound track on a major motion picture. We received bids for $5,000-7,000 USD to recover the data which was probably only 200 MB. That was a number of years ago. You may not need data recovery, perhaps something was knocked around when the drive fell and possibly it could be repaired.The data may still be intact. The OP means crushed hard drive not crashed hard drive. Someone else who knows nothing about computers. Crashed means if the data in a hard drive has become corrupted and is inaccessible, not pertaining to the Ops problem as his hard drive has physical damage. cmsally Posted May 28, 2009 Share Posted May 28, 2009 One of my computers totally packed out and couldn't even switch on. Chi Chang salvaged all the old data on to a new computer. However the case may have been different in that the problem wasn't specifically with the hard drive. It could be worth asking them (Chi Chang at Chiang Mai Land). FYI Panthip Plaza on Changklan Rd (night Bazaar) has two escalators. If you enter from Changklan Rd there is one to the right next to Ofice Depot and one to the left, near TT&T and TOT shops. I used a guy on the top floor of Pantip, next to the escalator to the left. When you reach the top floor there is a shop to the right of the escalator that converts VHS tapes etc to VCD/DVD. His shop is next to that shop. Sorry, I forget the name. He was a great help and managed to retrieve about 90% of my crahed 160Gb drive. A lifesaver!!
