Police round up street beggars at the Tepprasit Market in Jomtien

On Friday Night, Police Lieutenant Colonel Omsin from the Police Region 2 Child and Women’s Protection Unit conducted an operation at the Weekend Market which takes place on the Tepprasit Road in Jomtien. The aim of the exercise was to clear the market of street beggars and to ensure that any children who were either begging or accompanying beggars were not being maltreated. A total of 20 people were detained including 7 women, 3 men and 10 children. They were all found to be of Cambodian Origin and had entered Thailand illegally. A Thai Woman thought to be in control of the beggars managed to escape. The detainees will be checked to ensure that the children are being cared for by their parents or a responsible guardian and if the adult detainees cannot show evidence that the children are theirs or their legal guardian, the children will be taken into care.
