Yes, it will, but not before the new one arrives.

Sometime in August, the 3GS will go on sale for similar prices as the existing 3G, and the 3G will get cheaper. By how much is hard to say b/c the USA prices are all subsidized and with contract so it's a bit unclear how they reflect the real price.

In the USA, the new 3GS came in at the old iPhone prices, while the 3G dropped to $99 with a 2 year contract.

The TRUE iPhone is not unlocked, be aware, you can still only run it on TRUE.

Truely unlocked iPhone 3G versions (from Hong Kong) are currently around 24,000 baht @ MBK.

Where did you get this information from? That is not what i've heard from others. I know that HK does a truely unlocked iphone but warranty is not international therefore if anything were to go wrong u'll need to send it back to HK.

This site on apple lists all iphone carrriers around the world and wheather it is locked to that network.. if you see Thailand, the box is not ticked.

I stand corrected, sorry for the initially wrong information.

You can buy a "truely" unlocked TRUE iPhone, but you must be an existing TRUE customer, be it with a TRUE phone line, TRUE visions, TRUE move, whatever.

Again, sorry for the confusion.

The 8GB is 24,500 plus tax, the 16GB 28,500 plus tax.

But it's doubtful that the price will go down much. Once the new version is in stock, you'll get the old one only through other dealers.

Hi...

Thanks for your reply.. If you know anything about iphone maybe you can help me out. I have heard through treads and mac forums that people who have bought a legally unlocked iphone from HK, China, etc. places that offer a factory unlocked iphone, however after a software update, the phone relocks itself. Then the users would restore the device and it would be bricked and dead altogether, these people will take it to apple and their dealers with miniminal co-peration and basically getting the same response: 'sorry we can not help you'

I do not want to be paying top baht to update my software to 3.0 and then have the phone relock itself and having true saying sorry you just paid 24,500 for a very expensive ipod...

Depends where you buy your iPhone from, but there's a very reliable shop at MBK - bought two unlocked HKG versions there with no problem whatsoever.

If you still doubt it, they will activate the phone there right in front of your eyes with iTunes and reload the whole firmware if you wish.

Just bring along your SIM card and test the device yourself on the spot.

You can't bargain with them, they have their fixed prices - last week a 16GB was 23,900 baht.

PM me and I give you the name and contact detail in case.

And yes, you have to be careful at MBK. This shop though is absolutely reliable.

Just buy from True once the new ones come out. If they say you need to be an existing True customer get a 99 baht prepaid SIM from the shop next door. I doubt they bother to ask though. As long as you pay full price, no problem.

You are of course right. Many people in Thailand use AIS or DTAC on their True-purchased iPhone.

The list is very interesting, thanks for posting.

Shows which countries are suckers (most) and which aren't :):D :D

I wonder why on earth I would want to do that. Why go to a place where I "have to be careful" to pay the same price as I pay at the True shop?

Why not buy from the official dealer in Thailand and get an official 1 year Apple warranty thrown in? It seems like a much, much better deal.

Some want to save the roughly 20% - but you're certainly right, the price difference is miniscule by now.

I am definitely buying from True in case of breakage and i would still be covered. We already have True internet and TRUE Move Tv thingy.. can't remember the name right now. So no need for sim card. Of those of you who have got iphone from true, what is the iphone 3g part number??

MB489TH/A

MB496TH/A

MB500TH/A

Any of these?? I tried talking to iphone customer care, but I don't think they understood me because i could not type Thai and they didn't really answer the question i was asking. But Yes i think that is very reassuring doing the update at True incase anything were to go wrong. I study aboard so i can not afford by phone becoming relocked again.

I'm not sure about getting old 8gb iphone or new one? because with the software update you're getting pretty much everything the new iphone offers ( other than speed, camera and vdo) which i can really live without.

It is much more exciting that way. I always felt sort of shady buying iPhones in MBK. At the time though it was the only choice I had.

I don't understand - what's the use of the iPhone in thailand other than as status symbol?

Does TRUE actually have a functional WiFi service in Bangkok, let alone outside? (it's not like o2's incl. coverage in London is that impressive).

I also thought Thailand's 3G network was in its early days?

I think the phone bit of the iPhone is the worst part, but you need WiFi or AT LEAST 3G to enjoy the other apps that are what actually makes it a different device IMHO.

Using my Iphone in Thailand has been very satisfying even without 3G and my experience in buying an unlocked HK Iphone last Nov at that very reliable shop was a total winner< cough cough>.. Haven't seen anyone mention the really great benefits on offer there. In a word service is great and the extra benefits are fantastic..Will just say I have still not gotten to all the great extras..Would do it again in a heartbeat if it weren't for the Dev group who have made it too easy to diy..

Even now there is probably something to say for getting a factory unlocked unit. If you don't want to diy and/or you want to get a total entertainment package with your iphone then ask and you shall find.
