I know this is not related to what you are asking for, but a friend of mine up in British Columbia Canada, just bought a shipping container to store things on his property while his house is being built. The container was very new and seemed to originate in Bangkok and did not have many dents or apparent mileage on it.

If you are in the USA, I am almost sure it is best to arrange to have the container shipped by dealing with a US company that deals with Thailand. Let them make the arrangements, tell you where they ship to, approximate ship time, etc. Of course specify full or the smaller size containers.

let me jump in here...

If you need the container as "packaging", i.e. you want to send some merchandise from A to B, the shipping lines do provide them. This is included in the seafreight rates and comes cheaper (!) than shipping your own container. Hence, do NOT buy your own container if you want to ship something.

To arrange the container booking, talk to a freight forwarder of your choice, the Thailand/US route is not particularly difficult and basically anybody in the business should be able to do it. A good freight forwarder should also take some time with a newbie and explain the ins and outs of transportation.

If you want to buy a container for STORAGE, different story. Shipping lines regularly sell used containers that are no longer suitable for sea transport. Those containers might still be in good shape for storage purpose, though. Also here a freight forwarder can be of help as they get approached by shipping lines from time to time who want to get rid of the containers.

Since in Asia is a permanent shortage of containers and the shipping lines have to bring empty containers in, the market for used containers is quite limited in Asia. As a result, used containers are in Asia much more expensive than they are in Europe or the US.

I would be surprised if there are not many shipping containers already being built in the realm. It's not all that difficult to weld a few bits of steel together.

And yes!! I know there are specs to meet but if Thai companies can build oil refineries (admittedly with some foreign guidance) I don't think a few steel boxes would be beyond them.

I will try to answer some of your questions.

Shipping-

I used a Thai company called Rama Shipping. They are located in North Hollywood on I think it was Sherman Way over very near the Burbank airport. Rama was a VERY good choice as they are located in L.A. and Thailand. They have a very good reputation with the Thai customs people. My container was NEVER opened by the customs people. I did supply a complete list of everything that I loaded into the container. , the smartest thing I ever did was to spend the money for shipping. Many of the things that you have in your home simply can’t be found here.

The prices 7 years ago were

$2300 for 20ft. & $3300 for 40 ft.

I ordered a refrigerator (Whirlpool?) in the U.S. made for 220 volts and high humidity.

I just priced a side by side (2 door) refrigerator here in Bangkok with an ice maker, and indoor water dispenser the cost was 150,000 baht. (top of the line)

If you want a gas barbeque you should get it in the states.

If I had it to do all over again I would have got the 40ft container. They did manage to pack everything I own into the 20ft but just barely. Someone once told me to order the 40ft. container and load all of my belongings in and then go shopping to completely fill the remaining space. I would have also loaded cases of hard to find food can goods.

I saw that you have got a lot of responses reg. your question. especially RARO seems to know what he is talking about.

I have been working with shipping via sea for the last 41 years and still do it from here.

You shall approach a local shipping agent in you hometown or closest port in your homecountry, they will help you out.

Like somebody says, this is not especially difficult operation, rather easy.

1- decide what you like to ship over here to Thailand

2 -see if you can measure it.. you can ship LCL (less container load) or FCL (full container load), however there is a limit

ecomomicly when the LCL is getting expensier than a FCL container, so see if you can by some means measure your goods.

3- ask the shippingagent for a price including everything up to Bangkok, like if you want help with packing... if you do it yourself

you can save a big lot of money I can tell you. Howvever seainsurance goes from A to B if you pack yourself...

4 - ask him name of shipping line he will be using....

5 - if you accept their offer, next step is to contact a shippingcompany in Bangkok, all customs clearence are done in Bangkok, me myself

was fortunate to deal with Dragon - Mr Kim. he did a good job. Tell him that you will have a cohntainer coming in to Bangkok via shipping-

line so and so and ask him for arrivelcharges from the oline, Dragons own prices for their service. They can also offer you a oncarrige-rate

if you need a transport down to Pattaya or where ever you live.

6 - have everyting paperwise saved.. you can easily end up arguing about this and that, so save all your correspondance..

What concerns all this talk about export from asia and expensier sales rates of containers, that is fully correct, but do not MIX this up with

the extrem full stacks of MT containers here rount Bangkok. Thailand has next to nothing export to offer the shipping lines, so they keep the

containers here for a period of time until either; the export picks up or they position MT equipment round all Asia....

ps JST, I saw that packinglist, it is beutiful, but you do NOT have to be so dam_n careful when issuing a packinglist... kitchenware for everyting

in the kitchen besides electrical stuff is OK for the customs... Bedroomware exept furniture is OK

I did this over a year ago from CA, they picked up the stuff at my house (mostly pre-boxed), put on a truck ( I already had "soft" quoted prices (by size of box) for shipping) after they boxed completely (crated..they built it in LA) gave me final pricing, came upcountry delivered in about 6 weeks. It would have been faster but arrived around Kings Birthday holiday time-frame...customs, etc kinda slow...Door to door service.
