Ram Upgrade

Recommended Posts

My Sony Vaio is currently running with a 2 GB DDR2 Ram and a sales guy at the Sony shop recommended me to upgrade it with a 2 GB DDR3 Ram; will I get more storage space in my laptop or the upgrade is only to make it run faster? The guy told me that with the upgrade, the battery will last longer, is that true?

Thanks

Assuming your machine is capable of supporting DDR3 RAM, it will not give you any additional storage, but may improve the speed of some applications. It could also increase battery time.

However you should note that although RAM speed is a significant speed factoor many applications, there are others such as disc speed, graphics chip and the amount of RAM so do not expect a significant speed increase just becuase you have faster RAM

DDR3 is not downward compatible with DDR2 slots. They operate at different voltages and the memory slots have different keys so DDR3 can't fit into a DDR2 slot. DDR3 FAQs.pdf

I've not heard of any dual memory compatible notebooks. Which specific model do you have?

my advice is goto crucial.com / kingston and use their configuration for your model to check your options and order from them. I find the knowledge of Sony staff in stores especially in Thailand somewhat limited to say the least.

Thank you guys for your valuable comments.

Tywais, my netbook is a Sony Vaio VGN TT 15SN.

According to the infos in thaimite's recommended link, there is no significant improvement of the DDR3-1066 RAM over DDR2-1066 RAM, there really isn’t any compelling reason to upgrade your current DDR2 RAM.

I won't do the upgrade.

I looked up the specs for that model and it shows it comes with DDR3 already. :)

:D you're right Tywais;

Now I remember, the sales guy recommended me to add another 2GB DDR3 Ram, 2 GB + 2 GB, apparently there is stiil a slot available and after that my machine will be "sud-yod". Is it worth to do that?
