they were open last night - I poked my head in just after 1AM. There was me and one other farang in there, and about 40 staff...

One thing I wonder:

if it's a disco now, [not a gogo], does that mean no barfines?

Hi Pat

Are you a DJ at one of the Thai places?

Most of the places I have been to have very loud obnoxious thumping music. Is there any reason for this? I would have to rate DJ's as one of the worst features of nightlife in LOS. When I go out I wear earplugs so that tells you how much I appreciate the music.

What is wrong with Thai DJ's? It is so bad even the government has gotten involved. Any inside scoop to share?

Mostly Thai language Hip Hop with a bit of English thrown in. They're not bad.

Brit, that's always a possibility, but I somehow think there may be one or two tickets still available. :o

Hmmm don't know where you are going but Tony's, Lucifers, and Xcyte. Lights on, and music off by 1AM. Even the world famous Blues Factory is quiet. I wish it were different, but it is what it is presently.

You haven't heard anyone say any such thing.

The fact is that music played too loud hurts anyone's ears. Not only

is it unpleasant but it can lead to permanent hearing impairment in

anyone. In the West it would be illegal continually to expose the

staff, at least, of your bar to noise levels so high as they are in

The Blues Factory.

Now even the Thai gov't (!) has recognized the fact and requires

entertainment places to reduce noise levels to not more than 91

decibels. You can read about the initial announcement here:

http://thailand.prd.go.th/the_pm_view.php?id=508

And what is the noise level in The Blues Factory? You don't even know,

do you? I'm quite sure that it's normally far more than 91 even at the

rear of the bar where you normally hang out.

d> I hate it when customers walk in my bar sit down have a drink,

d> Constantly get the attention of the service staff and put their

d> fingers in their ears as if to say "Loud is'nt it?" IT'S A LIVE

d> MUSIC BAR

The customers have been trying to tell you something that you've never

been able to hear, Dave. I trust you don't mind that it's been very much to the detriment of your wallet. Business is that good, eh?

I suppose you're lucky, then, that those customers don't return and

that you have far fewer customers, since most people--wisely

enough--do not want to hear music played at such a ridiculously high

volume. Me, I love rock and blues I never bother going to

bars where I must--or should if I care about my hearing ability--wear

earplugs. There are plenty of good bars where wearing earplugs isn't

necessary.

Music can be too loud whether it's live or not. And other music bars,

live or not, manage to keep the noise level down to a bearable,

non-hazardous level. I would further note that the canned music played

during the band's break times is just as loud as that played by the

band itself.

The fact is that the noise level in The Blues Factory is about the

highest of any bar in Thailand. Which is to say, absurdly, hazardously

loud. There's nothing "cool" or "hip" about that.

I do think it's a shame that the band can't stand in front of those

huge, ceiling-high, stadium speakers and be fully exposed to the noise

level to which they subject the staff and patrons. The volume THEY

like isn't what the staff and patrons hear.

I'm not gonna bite with this one but.

Those huge stadium speakers look biggr than what they are because of purpose built racks to make them higher off of the ground

You obviously hav'nt been in many other bars or clubs then.

I hav'nt a clue, Thats an ongoing battle i'm having at the moment, Trying to bring the sound down. When you have a deaf 60 year old guitarist it is'nt easy. You will find that the majority of the sound comes from the stage amps not the PA as the PA is brought down because the rock band are too bloody loud.

The comment i made was regarding early customers at 10-11pm moaning about the house band which are normally at a decent volume. I've sat by the door before having normal non shouting conversations and customers next to me and asked for the sound to be brought down. It is'nt a lounge bar.

I would welcome a sound level recorder so as we can try and bring it into line as i'm well aware of the government requirements. I'm in the processes of buying one for the bar.

This is another problem that i'm trying to deal with (along with others) and hopefully it will be dealt with soon, I have a head start now as luckily my idiot of a DJ has quit and i can now control the sound without idiots messing about with it.

Bear with us as it WILL be dealt with eventually.

And no i'm not the kind of person that does'nt give a toss as long as the money is coming in.

Cheers

DT

Most of the places I have been to have very loud obnoxious thumping music. Is there any reason for this? I would have to rate DJ's as one of the worst features of nightlife in LOS.

This is an inexperienced DJ trying to play the music as loud as possible because thats what they think they should be doing. If they move in the right direction soon they'll realise that it's about OTHER folks enjoyment and not only theirs.

But sadly you're right, there has never been enough star Thai DJs to set standards, and for the ones that are 'stars', they don't have the same desire to pass on their 'knowledge', apart from a couple I know who are nurturing some great new talent.

Myself and Ofay have been brought in as 'guest' DJs, ie considered to be more skilled and experienced than a resident DJ. The difference is that we would bring a bit of slightly different quality music to the night and the music would be at a far better controlled level.

As a DJ, experience is an invaluable asset. Any DJ worth his salt will tell you that.

well, not that I've walked into Dave's place with a meter, but based on my many years of experience doing live sound in a side variety of venues and musical styles, I'd say Dave's place typically runs in the 90 - 96 db range. The times I've been in, anyway - I don't get in as often as I'd like.

The fact is that the noise level in The Blues Factory is about the

respectfully, I have to completely disagree with you there.

Calling something a "fact" doesn't make it true.

There's probably 4 or 5 places I could name right there on Walking Street that are louder - and you don't need any meter to verify that. Just walk in to Tony's, or Lucifer's, or Marine, for a start.

And I'm told that the loudest place in Pattaya is Hollywood, though I've never been there.

Oh, btw, have you ever stood in a room the size of Dave's place with a brass band playing - without an amp in sight? :D

When I was in New Mexico - there was some LOUD bands there!!! Half a dozen trumpets will shred just like a drunk guitarist. . . :D

Heh - reminds me of a joke, musos and sound guys will get it:

Little old lady comes up to the sound guy and says "the trumpets are too loud"

Sound guy: "I don't have any mics on the trumpets - only the singer, see?"

L.O.L.: "well if you had a mic on the trumpets, you could turn them down"!!!

Well its time for you to adjust your watch and take the trip to Marine Disco and time them , then you will see what time their on .. Then listen to the Mic man at closing time and he will promote M2 as open untill between 0300 - 0400 , then follow the stream to the next one. Even Lucifer goes untill 0200 sometimes depending on who is on the main seat at soi 9 at the moment. This is Facts :D

Not a bad night. Not many hip hop venues in pattaya, so makes a change. Is this going to be a regular gig for you, Pat? Free entry, but those ฿300 double vodka and oranges add up, still feeling the affects of those.

Posted

yes.

I thought it was a bit odd that in C.E.B. a Jack Daniels cost 150baht, yet right next in Hootys [owned by the same ppl?] the same drink is 130baht, and served by wonderful girls wearing not much more than a smile... :o

still don't know about the barfine situation in C.E.B. - forgot to ask - Pat, can you confirm?

Thanks for the comments Pat.

Have to disagree with the experience factor as it pertains to volume. The problem is to OBVIOUS. It is amazing the bar owners don't seem to be able to connect the customer feedback with money in the till.

It is about pleasing the customer not the bar owner or DJ.

Maybe a mandatory 6 hour training in Obvious 101 would help.

About twice a month I reckon, maybe more, but they'll be different music styles.

The girls at CEB are all freelancers.

True, because many DJs here don't get a shock when they see streams of folk heading for the door cos they played the wrong track.

Anyone interested in Hip Hop should visit my friend Alex in Soi 15 (off walking street).

He has a bar called the Ronaldo bar. He has decks set up in the bar and is a DMC standard hip hop DJ.

Check the bar out it is a nice place to chill out and Alex may even show you some of his mad skillz

Peace
