Traditional British Sunday Roast Lunch

MagnumForce

Recommended Posts

Just happened to be strolling down Charoen Prathet Road today and discovered this lovely new place serving Sunday Roast lunch. Had a very tasty helping of mashed and roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, veg including cheesy cauliflower, roast beef, roast pork and roast chicken all for 235B. The place is called Tiger Tiger and it's directly opposite the car park entrance to the Porn Ping Hotel or Hotshots disco as it may be better known.

Dessert was a few sneaky Beer Lao dark and some Large Heinekens! Very nice indeed.

Might I add that I have no stake in this place but that I'm merely mentioning it to let others who may be in need of a really good quality Sunday roast lunch fix to get what they need. It also appears that they do full British breakfasts but that would require a separate thread of its own methinks :) .

I don't think it's Brit-orientated dave2, except for the fact that they serve traditional British Sunday roast lunch and apparently traditional British style breakfasts and the manager/owner is English.

The rest of the bar has a very modern layout with a pool table and a tv for sports and an upstairs area and the toilets are immaculately clean, which in my book gets extra points. It seems they cater for a dj crowd as well maybe on different days or nights but regarding the lunch yesterday I was very pleased and it was a stroke of luck to pass by.

Don't worry. I won't stand in your way next week. There's plenty of room for those of us who like ye olde Sunday Roast. :)

The food is probably OK, but the photos don’t give me any inspirations to visit these cafes. As with the new Piggy`s fish and Chip cafe, why do all these places look like lock up garages?

Because renting a shop house is WAY cheaper than renting any other kind of building and all shophouses have the same layout. With business tight you need to save money where you can and rent is a pretty big hit every month.

Even in the city you can find shophouses for under 10k a month. There's no way you can find a stand alone building for that price, or anywhere near.

Is this place in any way connected with the real Tiger Tiger brand in the UK (Large chain of bar/restaurant/late night night club venues owned by Novus Leisure)? A shop house in CM doesn't seem quite in the style of the original, except the logo has some strong similarities. Has someone just borrowed the name, Thai style? :)

Also, is this the place somehow connected to the Martini bar, or do I have that wrong?

well you must only go to the most up market venues then as nearly all cafes and shops have metal shutters! have you ever had a business in thailand or do you just slag them all off without even being in them?

tigertiger is a very friendly bar and serves great food.

you should not make rubbish remarks unless you have something decent to say!

see you all in tigertiger for a great time! :)

You don't have to go then. Why waste your finger power typing? I'm sure your positive outlook will be sorely missed! :) This post was intended for people who might actually be keen on having a Sunday Roast lunch not for stupid comments by someone who hasn't even been to the place. If the photos don't inspire you why not go about 500m down the road to the Chedi and pay about 10 times the price for an arty farty type Sunday lunch. <deleted>!

However, if you do go you may be pleasantly surprised. In fact, those photos don't do the place the least bit of justice. Sorry dave2.

Funnily enough they don't look like lock up garages when they are open as the shutter door disappears into thin air, it truly is amazing you should really see it's almost magical :):D:D:D:D:D

Sassienie is right as far as I'm concerned, like he said the food might be OK but these shop houses in Thailand do look pretty awful. I'm not faulting the shop owners as they haven't got much choice. Back in the day when I was doing business in CM I rented a double front shophouse myself.

I was in Lijiang in China a couple of years back and all the shop houses are built in a sort of retro 30's Chinese style and really gave the town some atmosphere, rather than the concrete boxes that are churned out in Thailand.

I'll still be eating out in the less aesthetically pleasing buildings in Chiang Mai though and intend to give this one a try :)

re .... those photos don't do the place the least bit of justice. Sorry dave2.

no problem , fair comment but how do you make a closed shop look good or interesting ?

maybe ian forbes or greenside could photoshop some tables , chairs , people , a bear , the odd soi dog or something fun ? onto my pic to make it look better and the place more appealing to sassienie.

over to you ian forbes and greenside : )

have fun !

Decided to try it for dinner last night. Girl said, 'we only have snacks, If you want, I will go upstairs and ask owner if he will cook you something'. I told her not to bother him and left, past the sign that read 'Restaurant open from 10am to 10 pm !! Ended up at Deck 1, next to Riverside. More exoensive but very good.

You never seem to have a good word to say about anywhere you visit, possibly trying to bolster custom for your vested interest? :) Out of your total 37 posts the majority are praise for your interest, and the rest canning other people's establishments. I'm sure you will go a long way in Chiangmai :D

on Joe Jets...

We got there on Friday night. Didn't get past the door. It was empty and looked like a good quality hospital canteen but without customers. Much too clinical for a 50's Burger bar.

on Ratchamanka..

We ate there last night.

Won't bother again. Slow service, interesting men, cold food. Not cheap.

Only say it as I find it. I am fully qualified to make these judgements. I have four City and Guild's cooking and hotel management certificates. An N.T.D.A. Diploma with houours. A member of the Guild of Chefs and other organisations. I have owned hotels and top class restaurants and fast food joints all my life. Seems many people agree with me.

Maybe you haven't seen my positive posts on Deck One, San Sabai etc. Another excellent Thai restaurant in Kilaire Night market is Sila At.

Let me say this to you, that there are people here that well outshine you as far as qualifications go, yet we do not castigate other establishments with the likes of "it looked like a hospital canteen so we didn't get past the door"

As I said previously, you'll get on like a house on fire here. Maybe your City and Guilds worked well in Bethnel Green or Hackney Wick, but just doesn't seem to cut it here. :)

What about..

'As a pub, the Red Lion is an abject failure', that was a  good one.

And to keep this on topic - I must give the Tiger Tiger a visit - maybe on the way to Guitar man 'punk night', tonight.

Another quote on a thread about Historical Pubs ....

"They (Red Lion) wanted "corkage" to open a bottle. That was five years ago, and I never went back."

And the point is?

(pot, black , casting stones, high horses.. etc)

Typical KHunt remark :)

If someone gets on their high horse about their superior education and sense of decorum, as you did unfortunately, then they've got to expect a little bit of piss-taking, surely?

MaejoMan to Farangdanny ('Traditional British Lunch')

"there are people here that well outshine you as far as qualifications go, yet we do not castigate other establishments."

Maejoman ('Red Lion & O'Malley's')

"Well the Red Lion as a pub is an abject failure on account it has no atmosphere what so ever"

When I originally posted that quote you thought it was another of farangdanny's gems, but it was from you!!! :D

Maejoman ('Historical Pubs')

"people here seem to have such short memories, sad to say"   :D

Missed you at Guitarman. Friday maybe? We can give Tiger Tiger a try.

All good fun!!

Q: How do you know that you won an argument on a forum?

A: An initial silence in response to your post, followed by an insult!!

I took it as a compliment. :)  Besides, you've got to have some sympathy - he just fell off his horse!!!

No he doesn't. 'Cookie' does it for him, whilst the chunky chips are frying. Kevin's usually too busy annoying the customers ... if he's not playing tennis. :D

You mean your customers or Tv's customers?

(So Cookie uses beer?)
