I used to use the internet a lot to book hotels, buy tickets etc. However since my credit card has expired, until replacement card is got (another story) my only option is to use my Debit VISA/DELTA card. However since this is my money and not a credit card I am wary to use it online.

I fear some sort of disaster where my bank account is emptied either by fraud or else my a mistake or computer error etc. And we all know how (un) helpful banks can be on the telephone when the loss is not their own.

Question is this: Are there any guarantees of safety when using a VISA/DELTA card debit card online, and what 'if it all goes wrong'. Do I end up with and empty current account, pulling my hair out?

Any feedback might alleviate my Debit Card 'Hang Ups'

Nope, its not a visa electron, it is a proper visa symbol which can be used anywhere there is a VISA symbol. The closest I've come to using it is for an emergency cash advance inside a Japanese bank because Japanese ATM's hate western VISA cards.

Actually, can I get a visa electron for my Thai savings account? That would be useful in supermarkets etc.

What I have heard is that there are no guarantees in LOS like back in the US. So if your card/account is being drained you are in trouble.

You should have the 30KB/day max limit on the account so there is one protection.

Get internet access to your account so you can check it every two or three days to make sure all is ok.

I, like many others with Thai bank acounts, have a daily limit far higher than 30 thousand... 400,000 baht is the daily limit on my Kasikorn account through the ATM, or other means...

I would change that if I were you. If you ever need 400KB in one day (like when buying a car) you can go to the bank and get the cash or a check.

Maybe you have some good reason for that exposure, or are so wealthy a few 400KB hits won't hurt too badly (I have some friends who are in that category although it would burn them up emotionally to lose say 50K$).

Here is my experience. I have had a few unfair charges to my American Express credit card in recent years. I called Amex to dispute each charge. They did their investigations. In each case the charge was removed. By contrast my wife was using a Visabuxx debit card for a while. She had a duplicate charge from a merchant. Complained to the merchant and to US Bank, issuer of Visabuxx. No good. She was stuck paying double.

Moral of the story is that debit cards do not offer enough protection. We no longer use them. I had my bank reissue my atm/debit card to be just an atm card. While I don't regard Amex's process as fool-proof, they do seem to provide better protection.

Kasikorn bank offer a virtual e-web card which can be used for making purchases on the internet. The card is linked to a savings account that you will be required to open with the bank and you can request a usage limit to be put on the card, anything ranging from Baht 2,000 -100,000.

I am considering opening such an account myself and find that this is the only Thai bank to offer such a service. Bear in mind it is a 'virtual card' and will not work on sites that have the 'verified by visa' sign.

Check out their website kasikornbank
