Pattaya, September 21 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : Just after 9pm on Sunday Night, Police Lieutenant Colonel Paksar from Pattaya Police Station was called to the front of Soi Gopai on the South Pattaya Road to deal with a possible road rage incident. Officers were met by Mr. Patrick Alan Ward aged 38 from England, a resident of Pattaya who escorted Police to his Black Honda Jazz which had sustained damage caused by a rock which was reportedly thrown at the front passenger window by a group of youths. Mr. Ward explained that he was involved in a near crash close to the Duck Square Complex further up the South Pattaya Road with a motorbike that nearly collided with his car. Mr. Ward entered into a brief verbal altercation with the motorbike driver and then proceeded with his journey. Mr. Ward claims that the motorbike driver, who was part of a larger group of bikers, followed Mr. Ward down the road and one of them pulled up beside Mr. Ward’s vehicle and threw a stone through the passenger window. A police report was made of the incident and Police are investigating.

Jai yen yen Khun Farangie...confrontation is not appreciated (nor acceptable) in Thai culture...now how much easier (and cheaper) it would have been to keep you mouth shut and continue on your way :)

what are you pattaybunlover? man or mouse? squeek up...

i personally applaude Mr Ward, if no one ever says anything then bad drivers of any race will never learn from their mistakes

as to the cowardly act of the little bad boys gang following his car and then throwing a rock through the window, instead of any one of them dealing with it man to man at the scene, that says much more about the perpetrator and the attitude of Thai gang culture than it does about Mr Ward.

i believe its better to be a tiger for a day than spend a lifetime as sheep.......

i have been here over 10 years and during that time i have been in a life or death situation fighting with a Thai with a samurai sword, i am well aware they do not fight fair and from my perspective, yes, its better to be a dead hero than a live coward

i sleep better knowing i did what is right for me

whats right for you may be different, whether that affects you or not, i have no idea, nor is it my concern.

i have always preferred to march to the beat of my own drum......

apparently he said his piece at the incident, no one rose to the occasion so he left, they chose to bring it back to him in this cowardly manner

if it had been me, i might well have been so shocked to have had a stone smash the window of my car that i might well have veered all over the road and accidentally ran into/over the bikers and then drove as quickly as possible to the nearest police station.

sound plausible?

Exactly correct, Mr Ward is a lucky man.

It's got nothing to do with being brave and standing up for your rights as some have suggested, lucky he didn't get his throat slit. There are times when it pays to just let things go, and from some of the Heros here I would wonder just how well they understand Thailand, not well enough it would seem.

There are some who leave their balls at the airport and there are some that leave their brains there.

Foreigners stick out like a sore thumb here. We are easy to recognize. Thais don't fight fair (at least by our standards). They fight to hurt, they fight for keeps and they fight in large numbers.

All that for a 'near' collision?

For Timekeeper,....well id consider that a selfish attitude for me as i have a family to support, id rather be here for them, to each there own,but ill pick my moments and if im in with a chance ill defend myself, but im no fool and i wont take chances, but again if thats not your choice, then fine,..... :)

Time keeper, you cannot fight the culture

Although a lot of septics try

i am not fighting Thai or any culture, i am upholding my own beliefs

Ido understand, and its not a good feeling to have to back down, ( yes i have done it,) but its very sad when a friend gets beaten or worse and the reality hits home, id even feel sory for you ! :)

getting his throat slit while driving his car?

please read the report again

so how long have you been here ''understanding Thailand?''

understanding Thailand is not the issue, you miss the point, its understanding and being true to yourself that really matters

some of you are so paranoid about getting hurt you are frightened of your own shadows

those who advocate rolling over and waiing low to your knees, have you ever tried standing up for yourself?

if so what were the consequences?

did you get beaten, shot or stabbed?

i am still here and on the many occasions i have spoken up, often in the company of my Thai wife and she says usually says after the incident, that i was right to speak up and that the Thais will keep doing it to others until people speak up and tell them its wrong.

she either has a death wish for me or she knows something about actual Thai culture not the farang version of it

i agree its selfish, but its for me alone to decide how to behave and to live a happy life

however my wife agrees with me, as does my mother who ought to know me by now.

they know i would much rather go out fighting than in bed

as it is my insurance value is 5 times greater in the event of the former than the latter

so i hope for their sake financially i do go out that way......

With respect i think speaking up is fine, but we are talking a couple of steps up the ladder here,i dont think anyone is saying dont speak up for yourself, just be careful if out numbered and it turns ugly,.

i respect your views and just for the record i know my own limitations

i do not have a death wish, i do not court confrontation, i try to avoid situations and places that will test those limitations

however if it comes to me then so be it, i deal with it there and then

i do not have to lay in bed at night tormenting myself with a series of alternate scenarios of what i would have done, if i could have the moment again.

I agree. Caucasins fight to win; Asians fight to kill (solves the problem permanently.)

If I screamed at all the drivers that cut me off, etc. I'd be horse every time I got on my motor bike :)

if we get upset about motorbikes almost colliding our your car we will be in a permanent state of apoplexy in Thailand!

Sail before steam i.e. motor bikes rule here and that's a fact of life!

They are like Zeros coming out of the sun over Midway.

They are EVERYWHERE!

Moreover, we can be cut - up by a 50cc bike here with a man, woman, child and a week old infant carrying a fridge - COMING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION - and with no lights.

What can we do about it?

Better to laugh it off and count our blessings.

A road rage case wouldn't even be news in most European countries and self-righteousness seems happily missing in Thai culture.

A fair fight?

There is no such thing as a fair fight.

If there must be a fight, go in with your mind working, and before you go consider what might happen.

Go in for the kill, and use any dirty trick you know.

Any doubts, don't start, just withdrw and wait.

There may always be a second chance you can win.

The best way is just to try to sail around trouble.

If there is no damage but to your pride, forget it.

Fighting is never worth the trouble.

Congratulations...it didn't take long for a puffed-up farang know-it-all to give us his opinion on how things should work in THAILAND! And I most certainly agree that whatever profanities Mr. Ward hurled at the Thai "bad drivers" will help them to improve their driving skills. (Of course, there is also the question as to who's driving skills were at fault...most of the time, I find it's the farang drivers I spend most of my time cursing [from inside my car]).

The roads of most city areas in Thailand are very congested. There are many near and not so near misses a day...when one decides to drive in Thailand, one must accept this and adapt to the Thai way of driving of leave the driving to someone else. As I assume the initial clash was only a "close call," there was no call for Mr. Ward to lash out at anyone as these are just a part of driving in Thailand. Road rage is not appreciated in any country and if you decide to act like a bad-mannered farang then you will often suffer the consequences.

Hopefully, Mr. Ward learned a lesson...sometimes tuition is expensive in Thailand.

you are absolutely right Pattayabumlover

''it didn't take long for a puffed-up farang know-it-all to give us his opinion on how things should work in THAILAND!''

you take that 1st prize trophy as you were the very first to respond to the news item by the OP and tell us all how he should have behaved....

your latest follow up contribution is just as enlightening

your understanding of the report is full of assumptions and you have assumed facts not in the report

only asses make assumptions

how superior you must feel to wish that he had learned a lesson after being terrorised by a gang of cowardly thugs on motorbikes that attacked his car with a rock.

i hope it never happens to you.
