Where and what, is the Ram?

You say a lot of farangs meet there on a Wednesday night for a quiz night, which implies it's a pub or restaurant. But then you lump it in with Lotus, Klang Plaza, and the Mall as a shopping destination, which would indicate it's neither a pub nor a restaurant. Additionally, to me as a former long term Chiang Mai expatriate, the name "the Ram" is specific to the Ram group of private hospitals, with operations (sic) throughout Thailand (there's two Ram hospitals just in Chiang Mai). I'm guessing from your quiz night and shopping inferences, that the Ram in Khorat is not a hospital?

Sinbin

Why are my comments misleading? They are based on the reality of my own observations, and therefore are the facts of my experience. That said, it looks like the posse is out hunting for me ... there were three (yes, THREE) farangs in Makro today at the same time as me. I had to hide behind my missus just in case - and she's a full 15-inches shorter than me, and half my weight, as she loves to remind me about.

The Ram is a British pub / restaurant which is located next to the hotel Sabai. The reason why I also listed it among places where you can buy farang food items is because they also sell an assortment of canned foods from the UK, English bacon, sausages etc. There is also a long list from which you can order farang food items.

Don't know about any Ram hospital in Korat.

Thanks Jimbo

I looked it up online so I now know where it is and how to get to it - it's a long haul for me to visit in the evenings, though closer to me than some, but I might drop by on the odd lunchtime, especially if I'm doing a Makro run - just need to decide if I go there before or after Makro :)

Mr. Bottom's comments on Korat seem so far removed from my own observations that I wonder if we're referring to the same location. Perhaps Mr. Bottom has Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima (โคราช) confused with Tambon Khorat (also โคราช) which is in Amphoe Sung Noen and is about 30K west of Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima. I've driven through Tambon Khorat a number of times. It is indeed a very small place and almost devoid of foreigners. I doubt any of the minimarts in the Tambon carry cheeses or any other Western food products.

Historical aside: Tambon Khorat is the home of the historical Mon/Khmer city of Nakhon Raj/Khorakha Pura, from which the name Korat is derived.

Foogy,

I think you nailed it :)

And I'm not even in nakhon ratchasima (well I drove thru once), but about pak chong on the edge of the province I think you may be on to something...

The OP would have to do some very good research about Pak Chong. My gf and I built a house in Lamsompung, about 25 miles away, and I have been there 3 times totalling 4 months.

On my many visits to Pak Chong I have not seen or met very many farang. I think I could just about count them all using the fingers of both hands.

There are many eating places apart from the roadside markets and very good they are with saturday night being very busy with food and the English Premier leaugue on the many tv`s around.

Believe me farang food would be a saviour for me. My gf eats Thai/Asian food here in Scotland so why cannot I eat farang food when we are in Thailand. My one gripe is with Tesco in Pak Chong not selling enough UK food in their small `farang` section (and I guess I mean sausages.....frankfurters...yuk)

Great little place is Pak Chong.
