I saw in the paper today the full title of Prime Minister Hun Sen: สมเด็จอัคคมหาเสนาบดีเดโช ฮุน เซน นายกรัฐมนตรีแห่งพระราชอาณาจักรกัมพูชา . The portion after the name ฮุน เซน is, apparently, "Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia". Its the title I would like to understand.

My guess is:

สมเด็จ - His Majesty

อัคคมหา [the great and singular]

เสนาบดี - minister; Secretary of State

เดโช - authority; might; power; force

From Wikipedia:

"His current, full, honorary title is: Samdach Akkak Moha Sena Padey Dekjo Hun Sen. The title "Samdech" was attached to his name in 1993 by King Norodom Sihanouk. It is only an honorary title and does not give him further powers."

He apparently is not a member of royalty, despite his lofty-sounding title. Anyone have any thoughts on how his title was derived?

I'm not sure what the linguistic question is here. This is perhaps a touchy subject. A Cambodian acquaintance chalks it up to a combination of self-assignment, pressuring royalty, and sycophantic exaggeration. Take it or leave it...

สมเด็จ was from Cambodian language origin.

From Dr.Wit's dictionary;

สมเด็จ - n. Cam. abbot, great one, a title of high rank for a Buddhist priest. adj. high.

Is the PM's title a general title given to the leader in Cambodia or is it specific to Hun Sen? I have the a similar question regarding ป๋าเปรม. Is "รัฐบุรุษ" a generalized title, or is it specific to ป๋าเปรม?
