Hi all,

I will be driving to Krabi from Singapore on Christmas week. I am pretty much sure the way to reach Sadeo check point all the way. Thanks to NSE. I learnt the process of getting "on arrival visa" and insurance cover for my car. But from the Sadeo check point, I am clueless on my route. When I look into Thailand map in google, it is confusing too much as the road number 4 goes to Krabi also goes everywhere in southern Thailand. J Can someone suggest me the proper route map to Krabi from Sadeo? What is the cost of petrol in Thailand? My car drinks only unleaded petrol and is it available everywhere in Thailand or just in cities only? Are there any interesting places on the way which should not be missed in Thailand? Also please suggest me the routes which I must avoid too.

Thanks a lot for your advices.

Hi Neil,

Please elaborate further. Is that applicable to all the cars (incl. exporting cars for touring in Thailand)? When that rule was imposed?

By the way, what you mean by car visa? According to my understanding I need to buy insurance cover for 3rd party and declare that in custom.

Please advice more on this topic.

Hi Sarvanan,

If you haven't driven in Thailand as already qeuried, you should take time and have a read of some of the experiences in the motor forum.

Basically most Thai drivers are not very well disciplined on the highway, the fact that you can overtake on either side can catch you out if you are not fully concentrating at all times. Put a few 100 baht notes handy for tea money at the police checks.

Just drive as though everyone alse is an idiot and you will have no problem.

Don't stop for anyone other than the police.

have a safe and pleasent journey.

Leave Johor on route 3. Just north of Johor, turn left onto route E2. After 280 kms, turn left onto route E6 at Nilai heading for Kuala Lumpur. Keep on the E6 by-passing Petaling Jaya and then get onto route E1 by-passing KL. After 460 kms, you will enter Thailand at the town of Danok. Here, route E1 turns into Route 4. Get ready to pay a toll for the expressway. Follow rte 4 signposted Hat Yai. Before Hat Yai, turn left onto rte 43 by-passing Hat Yai. Rte 43 will turn into rte 4 again after Hat Yai. After 65 kms, turn left onto rte 41. Use rtes 4158 and 4159 to get to Krabi town.

ok this is how i understand it works

thailand expects every car entering from a thai port to be registered in thailand and tax paid---------200 per cent plus of the valuation of the car---------their valuation. or you go in at a land crossing and it seems you get a sort of car visa for 3 months which can be renewed at a border once only for another 3 months-------- separate from insurance which i believe you can buy at the border.

yes the driving is bizarre expect every driver of every vehicle to want to die as soon as possible that day and take as many with him / her as possible.

Hi,

NSE: North South Expressway. The expressway which starts from south border of Malaysia and extends up to north border of Malaysia. J I will be using the road to reach Sadeo checkpoint. By using this road, you will not get lost easily. Ofcourse, I will using James suggestion to bypass KL city with in Malaysia.

The way you import and the way I import is very different and different purposes. I am importing for touring in Thailand for a short wile. (~8 days). FYI, I am driving Singapore registered car. So, for my case, the 9 days cover of insurance should be enough. I will crossing border on 21st Dec 2009. I will keep you update my experience.
