Thailand meets most UN standards on treatment of prisoner

BANGKOK: -- Thailand has met most of the UN standards for the treatment of prisoners, the head of the country’s Department of Corrections told a UN conference on crime in Bangkok on Wednesday.

However Nathee Chitsawang acknowledged that more still needed to be done to improve medical services in the prisons.

Thailand has followed almost all the 94 points in the UN standards, but had not yet provided doctors inside prisons, Mr. Nathee told the UN meeting on the prevention of crime.

''We have not been able to recruit prison doctors so we have tried to solve the problem by periodically sending doctors into the jails,” said Mr. Nathee.

More than three hundred international delegates are attending the 11th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at the Sirikit Conventional Centre in Bangkok amid tight security.

Delegates have been discussing the UN standards on prisoner treatment formulated fifty years ago on the third day of the 8-day conference.

Thailand has successfully reduced the country’s prison population in each gaol facility from 260,000 to 160,000 to help solve overcrowding, Mr. Nathee said.

The head of Thailand's Department of Corrections said he agreed with other countries that no amendment should be made to the UN standards because of the world's wide diversity of culture and economies.

well i think thats the perfect solution, send more doctors to jail! In fact if they give them life, problem solved completely!

I wonder what the inmates think of this..

The reduction in numbers at Bang Khwang made a big difference. From 36 to 24 to a cell. Now the inmates get a meter-wide strip to lie down on, instead of pressing against each other. Also the visiting Doctor has been able to get anti biotics inside and make an effort at real treatment.

Though it is all a show, it has made a difference.
