Australian killed in Thailand crash

An Australian man has been killed in Thailand after a van reportedly drifted onto the wrong side of the road and collided with his taxi.

Roger Stephen Quinn, 55, was a passenger in the taxi travelling from Patong to Phuket International Airport when the accident happened in wet conditions around 6.45pm on Sunday.

An Australian woman also travelling in the taxi was injured in the crash and taken to nearby Vachira Hospital. The report did not say whether she was seriously hurt.

The collision is believed to have taken place on a notorious bend responsible for several accidents.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed a 56-year-old man from NSW had been killed.

"Australian consular officials are providing assistance to the man's family," she said.

Patong is Phuket's most developed beach and is very popular among Australian tourists.

I bet he wasn't wearing a seatbelt and like usual the driver somehow manages to survive after overtaking on blind bends like a moron.

So next time your in a taxi don't forget to ask the driver to belt you up and put your white stick somewhere close to hand.

was he in the front seat? if not then not likely to find a seatbelt in the back which has always amazed me.

RIP

such a shame as it appears he was on his way to the airport to fly home....

RIP

not surprising, at these hours the taxi drivers try to cut in front of people who are already cutting in front of someone in the middle of the other way's lane. 3way cutting is their favorite sport.

Sad thing, only happened because taxi drivers are too monkeyish to know that while they accelerate and break nonstop to get in front of 1 car(but still being behind 50 other cars going slow) they burn up all the money they make when they save 15mins by burning more gas.

I always dig out the seat belts and/or get taxi's with one especially with my children. It always gets a nice rise out of the driver when I ask for a seat belt and I particularly enjoy it when they say "I have" but yet they have no clue that the securing half is behind the seat and it's useless without it, they still expect you to get in just because it's hanging there but of no use.. :)

Obviously taxis are very basic vehicles, due to cost, hence no rear belts.

How many years will it be before belting up in every seat becomes law?

I hate taking my daughter in taxis and if I'm in the back I'm not too keen on them myself.

RIP

^Incorrect most do have rear belts..If the lazy driver isn't too bothered to keep them from being pushed behind the seat..

rear belts are an option here and not all vehicles have them, sorry

You are incorrect, the vehicles are built to base spec'. No alloys, white paint, basic interior including no rear belts.

Can we get back to basics re the origional cause of the accident by reading the first line of the OP, and when does wearing a belt make you immune to fatal injuries this thread seems to have now be based on a reply from somebody who can't read :) .
