Looking For New Snorkeling / Swimming Spots

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Title says it. Looking for new waters. Hope to hear about your favorite snorkeling / swimming areas.

Have visited several areas, here is a short list of good spots.

Starting from the south.

Koh Lipe : nice water, accommodations and restaurants. Cons : sometimes the currant can bring a lot of flotsam (trash)

Koh Adang : across from koh lipe, National park, nice big beach, Cons : not as easy to get a long tail boat, same currant as above.

Koh Rok : National Park, nice water. Cons: Be careful about sand fly season!! Need boat Consul -hire a longtail boat for a week from the dock not expensive.

Koh Phi Phi : easy to get to, party atmosphere, Cons : crowded with people, when swimming -be careful of longtail boats- they very often do not watch for swimmers and are very dangerous. Consul : on the back of Phi Phi are bungalows on the beach with good snorkeling and a restaurant. Hike over the hill for the party or change of scenery.

Koh Similans : National Park, beautiful water. Better for scuba diving and liveaboards.

Koh Surin : National Park, some of the best snorkeling in Thailand.

Note : National Park = expensive entrance fee, expensive camping/bungalow fee, minimal food options. But also = less fishing pressure in surrounding water.

Best regards, Roman

I do not know ko kradan. I think that railay/ phra nang will not have the clear water like koh lipe.

I love swimming too especially in the beach of thailand, philippines etc.

koh kram is a very small island off the coast of chumphon. (Looked it up on goggle)

Many areas, in Thailand, are great for swimming, depends on what you would like to along with your swimming.

For myself, I am looking for good water visibility and things to see under the water. I also like bungalows on the beach when possible. but have also had great adventures camping on the beaches at some of the national parks.

I will be organizing a trip to the surin islands mid March which has some of the best snorkeling in Thailand.

Think some exploring along the coast of Chumphon is also on the horizon.

Maybe looking for a couple travel partners, send pm for more info

Anybody else? Would like to find new spots for snorkeling. Will you share yours??

The only place i've been to for snorkelling in Thailand is at Koh Chang. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but be forewarned Koh Chang is quite a tourist spot. The upside to this is that there are daily snorkelling tours readily available (i booked with my hotel but if you head to Bang Bao which is the fishing village, theres loads of places where you can sign up for a day trip. I paid 500baht for a 9am-5pm trip, lunch and taxi to and from hotel included). The boats take you out pretty far, to about 4 snorkelling spots throughout the day. Of course, the water is beautiful.

What i didnt like though, was the large group of other tourists on the same boat (literally), and the marine life was not that awesome. Dont be discouraged though, the boatmen were really great and friendly, we hung out for beer that evening!

The best place i've snorkelled at was at Perhentian, Malaysia. Its near east side of Malaysia, and the waters there are gorgeous. The marine life was very impressive, i managed to see reef sharks and if you're lucky, turtles. Plus you get to hire your own guide if you want, or you could save on cost and hook up with other people. But the group is always kept small, 5 or 6 at most, so its still really cosy. Sorry to digress, but i really love Perhentian island. Quite different from Koh Chang - just take away the cars, bikes and crowd.

I've been to Ko Ngai~ beautiful white sand beaches, clear water and good snorkeling, hard and soft corral.

Accommodations weren't the cheapest and the island is small. Great spot for chilling out.

Try Koh Tao, some great snorkelling down there and the coral is showing great regrowth after years of decline.

went there about 18 months ago and there was some ok marine life but most the coral was as dead as a doornail :)

Beaches/swimming/snorkelling on ko tao was very overrated imo/ime
