Hi all, looking for a helpful suggestion to my problem.

My laptop (Sony VGN-FZ21Z running Vista) has been working fine with a wireless connection to my Linksys WAG200G router for 2-3 years. A couple of days ago it stopped loading pages and email but for some reason it will connect to Skype. Other laptops work fine and if I plug in an ethernet connection my Sony works. Even Bluetooth works but nothing on wireless except Skype.

I have called TOT and Linksys support and gone through setup but no change. I am no techy and have clearly missed something. No new software except the usual Microsoft updates.

Any helpful suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

it is something in your internet settings of your wireless network. on your laptop

what do you see when you click the start-button and run and type in cmd (enter)

and then in the dos box ipconfig <enter> :)

Check for virus and if that is not enough reinstall the wireless connection again. If you do not have the software look at the Sony site. A driver update is not bad anyway ---- mostly....

Skype connects via IP address, so bypasses your DNS server.

It sounds like a DNS problem, try changing to google DNS 8.8.8.8 + 8.8.4.4 or the thaivisa one which I can't remember the IP address of.

Here is a link with a small guide on how to change DNS server.

Thanks for the speedy and helpful replies guys.

It seems it was a DNS problem. As i mentioned I'm not technically minded so I tried TOT once more and they walked me through the problem and gave me new numbers to enter and now the wireless connection is working fully again.

Is there and advantage to the Google DNS 8.8.8.8 or the Thai visa one?

Thanks again!!

I think the Thaivisa one is slightly faster inside Thailand, but I've never tried it because I have never been able to find the post george made long time ago with the IP address.

You just made the experience :D The DNS server acts like a phone book. Translates your entries you can read to numbers - the IPs. Google.com to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. I was always wondering how can be a phonebook far away be faster than the phonebook directly at your ISP. You have to call the server perhaps in the USA to get the number. Why not call your ISP where you have the fastest connection to. But I never understood computers or my Thai girl friend :)

try another channel. I had a similar problem with other routers in the neighbourhood interfering with mine. Tried another channel and since the connection is stable again.
