I was wondering...

I see shops downloading stuff on utorrent right infront of the store where everyone can seem them, as well they are tenant of the premises.

Like they need to register with the govt or something to get the business started am i right? Like the premise is registered to sell games, etc.

So what is really going on?

If I don't like the store, I could blow whistle or something and get them into trouble? Or the government don't give shizzle or what if I contact the microsoft or some established company for copyright infringement? I saw somewhere that piracy per offence is like $500,000 or something along the line.

Or are they like organized crime that will haunt me dawn or something...?

For every action there will be a reaction, so get used to it. Microsoft did what they did, and now they get to enjoy the repercussions, and just thank God it's only software and not hardware.

In lots of places in the world you don't need to get licenses to sell anything apart from controlled goods like alcohol or drugs, however they are definitely breaking the law. Trust nobody in Thailand, especially the police, it is likely the local police are receiving bribes from them to protect against arrest which is why they do it so blatantly.

If you go out of your way to make trouble for people then expect the same in return.

bribing the police, officials... but there are heaps of them. And unbribed police, officials surely go out on weekends to department store etc... aswell, police got nothing todo during work hours, so most likely bribed officer will discuss with his mates.

i think they are working for some huge org crime (chinese mafia????) from china or something i reckon. some stores got like cardboxes full of copied items.

but with it's mass production and selling at 20-100baht a pop i dont really see much profit in it... they gotta pay rent, expenses, production etc...

i suppose that 500,000 fine is within their country, and they can't enforce it here cuz of out of their jurisdiction i suppose

Actually it is a double edged sword for companies like Microsoft. It Thailand strictly enforced the law then windows would lose market share, and Thailand would become a country of Linux

experts. Yjey are willing to put up with it to get/maintain market share.

A more sustainable mean to fight piracy is to sell legal software / music / movies at prices competitive to pirated ones. You are now seeing Antivirus software licenses being sold for 800 Baht at malls and DVD movies at 79, 99, or 199 Baht.

I think everything what those shops offer you can download from the internet for free. I guess this is their source too. So somehow an easy way to print money for them. And a good business has often many friends. But again - since you can download all this stuff for free they will find it harder and harder to survive.

That it is not legal what they do is no need to discuss. I am just thinking what would be on many computers here in Thailand if they would use legal software only. And to turn it around - how much business would the software companies gain here in Thailand if the people really buy the software? Business users should stay away from those software shops anyway. And the rest? I am afraid not a big market. So at least they buy hardware and learn how to use computers for the future. Perhaps they will be more honest customers then when they have more money. At least it will be hard for them to be without one when they got used to them.

But I think the copy protection is getting better anyway. Is there any crack out for Win7 that works more than 3 months or even after a year and can handle updates or was there one for Vista?

Maybe check the fine print first. They charge a download or copy fee that is all. Totally legal. You can download this yourself but many don't have a connection that can handle it so they go to these shops. cheaper then start up a connection buy a router etc etc.

You have to reg. or activate yourself to be legal copy and that is not their problem if your the pirate. Many online sites do the same thing. Just google free download.

You can blow their cover but be ready for the libel suite that follows, I am sure they like easy money.

I never read the fine print. I always thought they just sell the raw CD/DVD and do not care what is on them. Did not know that they charge for the downloading service. That makes of course a difference Will try to put some downloading service on eBay. Allways worked too hard for my money.

The store will already be paying the police to stay off their backs. The economics of this are that if anyone gets shot, it's probably going to be you.

^lot of the pirated software also have the downloaded virus(s) with them. Wish the pirates would be more careful.
