Singer addresses Macklemore controversy on stage — condemning the October 7 attacks while calling the devastation in Gaza “catastrophic and unjustifiable”

‘I never wanted to be an activist’

Ed Sheeran has broken his silence over the controversy surrounding his US tour, telling a Philadelphia audience that he never wanted to become a political commentator but can no longer avoid the argument surrounding Israel and Gaza.

Opening his solo show on Saturday, Sheeran acknowledged that “mistakes” had been made and said the controversy had placed him in the middle of a passionate debate about free speech and one of the world's most difficult political issues.

“I never wanted to be an activist musician,” he told fans.

But he added: “This is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore.”

Gaza ‘catastrophic’

Sheeran condemned the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, describing them as “horrific” and saying they had compounded centuries of Jewish suffering.

But he was equally direct about Gaza.

“What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” he said, describing the scale of civilian and child deaths as devastating and saying what he called systemic injustice in the West Bank could not be ignored.

He also admitted that he does not have all the answers.

“I do not know enough,” he said, adding that he was listening, learning and trying to work out how he could contribute to helping victims.

The Macklemore problem

The comments come after rapper Macklemore was removed from Sheeran's tour following his increasingly outspoken support for Palestinians.

Macklemore had performed material dedicated to pro-Palestinian protesters and referred to “genocide” in Gaza — a description rejected by Israel.

The rapper also stressed that his criticism of Israel was not directed at Jewish people.

Sheeran has repeatedly said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour's promoters rather than by him.

That has not stopped the controversy from following the British singer across America.

Several support acts subsequently left the tour in solidarity with Macklemore, arguing that removing him because of his political comments created a chilling effect on free speech.

‘Everyone is welcome’

Sheeran told his Philadelphia audience that his concerts had always been intended as a place where everybody could feel welcome, regardless of their political beliefs.

“I am honestly so grateful that you're here tonight with me,” he said.

He also rejected the idea that venues should effectively pre-approve what performers are allowed to say or which artists can appear.

The remark received applause from the audience.

Outside the venue, protesters waved Palestinian flags, while inside, fans appeared determined to separate the music from the argument surrounding it.

One couple told the BBC they respected Macklemore's right to speak freely. Other concertgoers said they supported a free Palestine while still wanting to enjoy Sheeran's music.

Then came perhaps the simplest response of the night.

When two teenage sisters were asked what they thought about Macklemore's removal, their answer was:

“Who is Macklemore?”

A very expensive argument

The controversy has also spilled into the ticket market.

Some tickets for the Philadelphia concert were reportedly available for around $32, while fans claimed they had been able to obtain refunds. Ticketmaster and Messina Touring Group did not confirm that refunds were being offered.

Macklemore's removal followed pressure from some venues, including Gillette Stadium in Boston.

Robert Kraft, the Jewish billionaire who owns the stadium and the New England Patriots, said Macklemore had crossed the line into hate speech and accused him of focusing selectively on the conflict while ignoring Hamas's actions.

Macklemore's supporters strongly dispute that interpretation.

For Sheeran, however, the issue has become something larger than one performer being removed from a tour.

He ended his statement with a plea for his concerts to remain places where people with opposing views can stand together.

Seems like a nice bloke who wants to enjoy life without politics.

People on the left are spineless. Refuse to condemn Muslims who kill gays and refuse to fight on the front lines in these wars. Gutter dwelling voices who hide on luxury rooms condemning select trendy things of the day. Hollywood is full of lefty cowards.

2/3 of his audience would be on the left who hate Israel. The music industry sadly is run by people with select agendas.
