Farma
I've just seen a couple of wild birds that i can't find photos of in my internet searches. The birds were about 50 cm long, about the size of a crow. They were black with a dark copper colouring on the wings. The beak was slightly curved. They reminded of a pheasant. They weren't strong fliers and appeared to be more suited to ground foraging.
mitmig
From your description I would say a Greater Coucal or Crow Pheasant (Centropus sinensis) http://www.pbase.com/moniques/image/106650560

villagefarang
I used to hear those things out on the trail long before I ever saw one. They are kind of shy around here. They sound something like a ape with a booming hooting sound.
