if you were British you would be so I guess so if there are no problems from the USA side - my son was in the same situation now got both UK and Thai passports. If you still have your birth cert I think you will have to get yourself registerd for a Thai ID card then take it from there.

I think you have to be in Thailand to register/issue a Thai ID card.

I believe it's mandatory by law for all Thai citizens in Thailand to have Thai ID card when one reaches the age of 15, so you'll have to prove with your passport that you have been out of the country if you don't have one yet.

I am also a Thai/Jap dual citizenship holder, born in BKK in '66. :o

Any possible problems that might arise from not having fulfilled the required military service?

No problem yet so far (at age 39). I have never been summoned a call to do the drawing thing as I was out of the country from age 18 - 32 and my parents who were in Thailand all that time said they never received the letter (mai riak in Thai?) asking me to come do the drawing all Thai men are required to do by law at age 21, but that doesn't make me officially exepmted from the military service, I assume.

So I don't have whatever the document that proves either I have served in the military or being exempted from the service. And frankly I don't know what problem might arise from not having it but heard if you didn't answer the summon by age 27 or so you can go to prison for draft evasion. Can anyone clarify on this? :o

Can anyone explain why I didn't get "mai riak" and where and how I can get ceritficiate of millitary service exemption (or whether or not I should bother getting one)?

As you are over 30, you won't have to see active duty. They only conscript 18-29 year olds. Even if you get a call up letter now (which you won't), and then are unlucky enough to pick the wrong coloured ball, you will simply be put into an army reserves unit (which is what all Thai men are a part of regardless of military activeness).

Army reserves, in the Thai sense, are a non-active unit of all males up to the age of 45 who can be called up in a time of national emergency. So unless Thailand gets invaded, you'll be fine. The Thai consulate in LA has the rules on a PDF file which you can download.

Thanks for the input samran :o

I am not so much worried for being drafted to active duty than I am for not being called up therefore not having any certificate to prove that I have fulfilled my duty as a Thai citizen (if that should be a reason for any concern that might arise in future).

How about you Samran? I am assuming you haven't served either, then do you have a certificate of exemption from the military service? Have you received the call up lettter when you were in Thailand?

I just learned from my wife 3 of my 4 brothers-in-law did not draw their lot. They paid under table to evade the drawing.

I'm in the same boat as you. Wasn't resident in Thailand between 18 and 30 (no Tabien Ban), hence no call up letter to evade. Was a student/working in Australia for most of that time anyway and I was able to renew my Thai PP at the embassy there 3 different times on the strength of a Thai birth certificate.

Am thinking that the next trip I have to thailand I 'might' go and check out if I need a exemption letter, as I have recived legal advice I will not be conscripted.

I just didn't appreciate the "spoil us" bit of sarcasm when what I asked was a good and legitimate question. No matter what your age, Thai males are often asked to show their certificate of either exemption from or completion of the military service.

It might have been good and legitimate question but it was bereft of information to enable a reply.

rw,

I am interested to see what you have done in getting your Thai citizenship. I too was born in Thailand, mother Thai, father filipino. Left when I was 3, and eventually we all became US citizens.

If I may ask you, please post your experience. Thanks for your time.

regards,

George

If you were born in Thailand then you will have had a Thai birth certificate issued. You are already by definition a Thai national. You need to take the birth certificate to the embassy in Washington DC, along with any other old Thai ID and they should be able to issue a Thai PP which you can use for travel to Thailand.

I'm new to this forum. I was looking for information, which is posted in that topic. I'm married with Thai lady. We have son, 2 years old, he was born in Slovenia (Europe, EU) and we apply for Thai passport, which eventually we got it. What we are questioning ourselves now is what are +++ and --- if our son have Thai passport? I would like to get some more info, if he need to enter Thai army or not? I have read all post in that topic, also look on Thai consulate in LA web site, to get PDF file, which I could not find it. Is it in Thai language? Can Samran post a link to download it please? In Slovenia, we have paid army so there is no need for man to serve in army. I'm afraid, that one day, when our son will be more than 21 years old, when he will enter Thailand, they will arrest him, since he did not serve in Thai army. Can this happen? How to prevent, that this will not happen? Thank you for your help. I got lots of knowledge in that post.
