webfact
Singaporean busted with 32 kg of ‘ice’ in Songkhla SONGKHLA: -- (TNA) – A Singaporean drug smuggling suspect on Saturday was arrested with 32 kilogrammes of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or ‘ice’ at Hat Yai railway station in the southern province of Songkhla. Border Patrol Police Region 4 officers, led by Pol Lt Watcharin Sri-on, detained Lok Chong Meng, 35, with ‘ice’, worth Bt76.8 million (around US$2.2 million) on an international express train from Bangkok to Butterworth at Hat Yai station. During the investigation, the authorities seized eight suspicious boxes containing electric kettle equipment which belonged to Mr Lok. Police found 32-kilogramme methamphetamine hydrochloride in plastic bags concealed inside tea tables. Initially, the alleged drug smuggler confessed that he smuggled the illicit drug from Bangkok before delivering it to his Malaysian client in Hat Yai. His client was to then transfer the ‘ice’ to Malaysia. (TNA) -- TNA 2010-02-20 [newsfooter][/newsfooter]
webfact
Thai police arrest Singaporean with huge crystal meth haul SONGKHLA: -- (AFP) - Thai police said Saturday they had arrested a Singaporean man carrying a huge haul of crystal methamphetamine drugs hidden in wooden tea sets near the country's border with Malaysia. Loh Chong Meng, 35, was arrested with 32 kilogrammes of the illegal drug, with a street value of around 76.8 million baht (2.3 million dollars), in four tea sets at Hat Yai station. He arrived from Bangkok. "Our team... got on the train to follow the suspect but they didn't approach him until he got off," said border police commander Pongsak Narkvijit, adding that they had acted on a tip-off. Hat Yai lies close to Thailand's southern border with Malaysia, where separatist militants have waged a six-year insurgency. Pongsak said the suspect had been charged with drugs trafficking, an offence which carries the death penalty in Thailand. -- ©Copyright AFP 2010-02-20 Published with written approval from AFP. ronz28
Why did you change the headline to foreigner from the word Singaporean when the newspaper article accurately reported it... the guy has an Asian name and is apparently not a white westerner as the similar sounding Thai word falang would imply. Thais usually report the specific country and avoid the inaccurate translation of foreigner to falang. The story is all about an Asian Singaporean taking drugs from Bangkok to Malaysia and has nothing to do with white westerners.

binky
Why are most of these busts the result of a "tip off?" Makes you wonder how corrupt things are and how much is getting through, in or out of Thailand.

Portlandstone
Why did you change the headline to foreigner from the word Singaporean when the newspaper article accurately reported it... I agree with this comment. I enjoy getting visa information from ThaiVisa but recently I've seen some rather anti-Western and pro-nonwestern bias on this site. I hope this is all just a big misunderstanding. Over on a thread about some Pakistani criminals, several comments were deleted under the name of 'racism.' The fact is that sometimes racially descriptive comments sometimes contain important details that lead to the truth. An example could be from this news article here. It just might be that when white foreigners run drugs they habitually do so with small quantities (worth a few thousand), but when drug runners in the local region run them, they shoot for big money. Removing the race / culture names also removes potential truth. And as someone else said, when it's a farang, the 'whiteness' is left in, but when it isn't a white, the word 'foreigner' is used? Because 'Foreigner' does indeed infer 'white farang' and is guaranteed to get the hits that racks up the advertising revenues. I doubt there would have been as many hits if it said 'Singaporean' and this would be a one post thread!
