รักเดียวใจเดียว

Featured Replies

For the listing "ใจเดียว" Lexitron has:

"ใจเดียว [ADJ] constant; steadfast; faithful; single-minded Ant. หลายใจ.

and the sample sentence: "ครอบครัวจะมีความสุขถ้าพ่อบ้านเป็นคนรักเดียวใจเดียว"

Is it reasonable to translate this sentence as, "A family will be happy if the father is faithful only to his wife."?

Thanks.

Yeah, totally agree with that translation. รักเดียว is 'to be true (to)' in my Domnern Sathienpong dictionary.

Another way you could say would be....A family will be happy if the husband is faithful and true to his wife.

That's the general idea...although the sentence doesn't actually specify to whom he should be faithful. :-)

"ครอบครัวจะมีความสุขถ้าพ่อบ้านเป็นคนรักเดียวใจเดียว"

As to the lack of an overt direct or indirect object in this aphorism, such as concluding the sentence with the prepositional phrase "แก่ภรรยา", I wonder if "เดียว" takes on a strong implication of excluding a minor wife, that is a "เมียน้อย" or "อนุภรรยา".

What do you think?

If a husband is faithful then it must be implied that he is being faithful to his wife whether or not the word แก่ภรรยา is included or not. So yeah, i would agree with you on that point but i'm not sure if the usage of เดียว strongly implies that omission but that the phrase รักเดียวใจเดียว means there is no เมียน้อย or อนุภรรยา in the first place.

However to look at it another way by directly translating word for word, it would come out as - one love, one heart.

Thank you, Murf, I never heard that song before.

I assume you know already, but...

In case it's not clear, I was just being silly with my reply above. The sentence states, roughly, that the man of the house has to be a 'one-woman' man. Most sensible people would, of course, assume that woman to be the wife.

"ครอบครัวจะมีความสุขถ้าพ่อบ้านเป็นคนรักเดียวใจเดียว"

I have a question about the use of บ้าน is it common to modify พ่อ with this? When I think of แม้บ้าน I think most commonly of housewife, but this sentence doesn't seem to imply that พ่อบ้าน is tied to the home for domestic work.

It can mean husband or the head of the family/house.
