waldwolf
CNET's News.com is reporting that Apple will announce Monday (June 6) it will switch from IBM processors to Intel. IBM, Intel and Apple declined to comment. Steve Jobs has been quoted as saying: "Mac OS X could easily run on x86 chips". The Mac OS X, a varient of FreeBSD, already runs on x86 chips, such as Intel's Pentium. More info here cheers
expatinasia
The OS would run, but the apps wouldn't work. Steve is hustling the folks at IBM and Freescale.
SeaVisionBurma
Won't happen, at least not soon anyways.... Apple-Intel deal unlikely to seed APPLE Computer shares jumped last week after The Wall Street Journal ran a story claiming Intel and Apple executives had been in talks about Apple using Intel chips in future products. The story subsequently got a huge run in the business and technology media. Many writers and analysts thought it would be a great idea: Pentium-powered Macintosh models would be cheaper and faster than today's Macs - which use IBM's PowerPC chips - and Apple's market share would leap, many of them argued. Doubleclick's advice: don't count on it. You're most unlikely to see Intel Inside stickers plastered on Apple Macs anytime soon. Here's why: a move to Intel processors could make Macs slightly cheaper, but it could also put Apple out of the computer business. Apple would have to come up with a new version of its Mac OS X operating system that would run on the Intel processors. That means it would have to support two versions of the OS: a huge extra expense. Khutan
My guess would be they would go to Itanium chips to differentiate themselves in the market.
