Hat Yai Hotels Haunted By The Violence

Hat Yai hotels haunted by the violence

SONGKHLA: -- Hoteliers in the once bustling town of Hat Yai have appealed to the government to urgently restore peace to the southern border provinces as tourists are still staying away because of the violence.

Hotels around Hat Yai are battling to survive and trying hard not to lay staff off, according to the Chairman of the Hat Yai Hotels Association, Somchat Pimthanapoonpon.

Hotel rooms around town have been vacant in the absence of the usual influx of Malaysian tourists during April. Even Thais have cancel their bookings for functions and seminars in Hat Yai.

The hoteliers’ plight has worsened since the series of bombings in Hat Yai on 3 April.

The best way the government can help Hat Yai's tourist industry to recover is to restore peace to the South as soon as possible, said Mr. Somchat.

Ref: Hatyai Hotels.

Last month I took my usual 5 hours drive from my Malaysian home

to Hatyai for a two days stay. I noticed that the Malaysian and

Singaporean visitors have dropped down to more than 70 % or

even more. It was a week-end, and the absence of visitors was

very strongly felt. Traders, shopkeepers and restaurant workers

were seen pleading/urging the very few visitors to go into their

shops. Most of the tourist places/shops were almost empty.

During normal circumstances, it would be full house.

Normally, my usual hotel would be quite crowded. On that

two days, I noticed that we were the only occupants on that

particular floor. No crowd at all. Even the usual large numbers

of Malaysian cars were missing. I managed to see one or two

instead of hundreds. The tourism industry in Hatyai is very

badly effected. And to be honest, we were very cautious to move

around.

I recently heard that the "war status" of Thailand had been raised (I think by the US Dept. of State--but not sure) to yellow status. Apparently this means that conditions in the country are not particularly safe.
