Rangsit University (prop. Dr Arthit Ourairat, he with the famous daughter) hits the headlines again.

They are in the middle of a public relations campaign to improve the university's image. This probably wasn't quite what the PR staff had in mind.

So have the Thai authorities identified the Uni yet? Shouldn't be hard with the building in the background.

The westerners are surely to blame!

At least that's what thais like to tell me when someone gets raped and then they say it's because westerners make movies too erotic (ie - Tomb raider).

It's a bit over the top that the national MINISTRY is going after a small group of students... seems to me this is the way they get around being too incompetent to find out where the university is (they have to get the press to do their dirty work) and then quietly putting pressure on them to tighten things up, which seems a much more common sense thing to do.

Our annual company trips aren't as wild as this, but it's the same idea. The company hires a "consultant" who proceeds to make everyone make fools of themselves in public - and they love it! As a Thai colleague commented wryly, "This is the Thai way - mass humiliation to promote a feeling of togetherness."

Students in offending sex-pic won't face rap

BANGKOK: -- Rangsit University has admitted that the university hazing incident in which a group of students simulated oral sex was held on its campus last year, but will not punish the participating students.

Akechart Sompongse, the university's deputy rector for student affairs, said checks found the photographs appearing to show female students simulating oral sex with male students were taking during last year's hazing activities at a compound in Pathum Thani's Rangsit district and were posted on the internet six months later.

He said the students involved felt remorseful and some had even shed tears over the incident. The university reserved the right to withhold their names and keep their faculty secret without punishing them, he said. However, they would ``learn their lesson'' from the incident, and would have to explain the incident to the Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC), he said.

However, the deputy rector appeared to contradict his previous statements by claiming the activity was not intended to give any sexual meaning as reported, but was a misinterpretation due to ``camera angles''.

Mr Akechart said Rangsit was the country's first university to issue regulations regarding university hazings as of this academic year as a way of promoting human rights, conforming to high ethical standards, and as a way of preventing acts of violence.

He said the regulations had been prepared before OHEC's recent request that universities ensure that all hazing and cheering activities took place on a voluntary basis, free of lewd content and conduct. The request called for the use of disciplinary and legal action against students in violation of these points, or alternatively moving to cancel such activities.

Pavich Tongroach, the secretary-general of OHEC, warned that the commission would be monitoring university hazings nationwide in order to prevent a repeat of improper behaviour, and would sue university executives should students be harmed during such activities.

The commission on Sunday called for cooperation from all universities, urging them to cancel initiation rituals after a freshman from Kasetsart University's Kamphaeng Saen campus in Nakhon Pathom committed suicide.

It is not yet clear whether or not it was linked to hazing.

Education Minister Adisai Bodharamik said university hazing had become ``out of control'' and unacceptable.

This is a typical re-action from education officials the world over not just thailand.

They are outraged that this could happen whilst in school uniform and bring discredit to their wonderful school.

If the students had been naked there would be half the fuss.

I'll bet the US Army wished they'd thought of that one when the Abu Ghraib shots got out.

Yeah, camera angles, that's the ticket.

And you could pretty much guarantee "Education Officials" all over the world have skeletons in their closets from when they attended Uni. I know that if someone dug into my past whilst at Uni, they would probably uncover some pretty tasty piccies!! :D The problem is, they then" grow-up" and "conveniently" forget their own past :o

More disturbing news developments regarding freshman initiation:

Alleged rape during initiation

Published on June 16, 2005

The Student Federation of Thailand (SFT) disclosed yesterday that a freshman university student had been raped by one of her seniors at an initiation camp.

“He woke her up in the middle of the night claiming she had to attend a cheerleading session,” said SFT executive member Kotchawan Chaibutr. “When the student went out with him, he raped her.”

Kotchawan said the allegation was based on information from a reliable source. She refused to reveal the victim’s identity or university, saying that proper measures to protect her from further humiliation had to be taken. “We must ensure the disclosure will not harm her further,” she said.

Pavich Thongroj, secretary-general of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), said he would investigate and encouraged the victim to come forward. “We promise her confidentiality,” he said. He stressed that if the allegations were confirmed, the rapist would be expelled from university and face criminal charges.

The report of the alleged rape emerged amid an outcry over a photograph taken during an initiation ritual last year and published on a website. It shows female university students kneeling in front of male seniors, their faces pressed to the men’s groins in imitation of oral sex, with other students cheering them on.

Rangsit University acknowledged the picture was taken on its campus last year. Vice President Ekkachat Sompong said faculty members were saddened that initiation ceremonies had degenerated into such public displays of indecency. “The students who participated said they regretted their actions and pledged never to do something like that again,” he said.

He added that in view of the students’ heart-felt expression of remorse over the incident, university officials let them off with a reprimand. “Let us hereby promise that no such incident will ever happen again on our campus,” said Ekkachat.

Both Pavich and Education Minister Adisai Bodharamik said they would leave it up to the university to decide what actions to take against delinquents.

However, Wiroon Tangcharoen, president of Srinakharinwirot University, urged officials at Rangsit not to protect offending students. “Let’s not forget about virtue,” he said. He also encouraged freshmen to protect their dignity during hazing rituals. “You don’t have to do everything your seniors tell you to,” he said. “If you feel things are getting out of hand, then by all means protest. You can all help clean up wrongdoing on campus.”

The House committee on education will listen today to students and HEC deputy secretary-general Suchart Muangkaew about their views on initiation activities. The HEC has asked all universities to suspend initiation activities following the suicide of a Kasetsart University freshman. He shot himself on June 5, and his parents have blamed intense bullying during initiation rituals as the cause of their son’s death.

The SFT and some university presidents have agreed to the request. “Initiation activities are intended to promote camaraderie, but it’s important that we know how to organise useful and constructive activities,” said Kotchawan.

(Refering back to the original BJ pics)

The Thais seem to be fine at unofficially sanctioning the biggest brothel on the planet i.e. Thailand, but are morally outraged by simulated blow jobs.

It seems to be more than a question of face here (i.e. two faced).

I wonder whether money has anything to do with this apparent contradiction?

Or am I oversimplifying things here?

If these pics came straight from the BG training school, would the little darlings who encourage much needed foreign investment into Thailand be penalised?

'Thosaporn Serirak, adviser to the education minister, yesterday showed the photos to the press.'

Thosaporn: curious name to have. Wonder if he 'tossed off' to the 'porn' is he probably called it.
