oldgeezer
If you dont know BKK, stay at the Nana Hotel on Soi 4. Nightlife right across the street. All taxis metered and cheap. Hotel probably less than 1k baht.
Tejas
If you dont know BKK, stay at the Nana Hotel on Soi 4. Nightlife right across the street. All taxis metered and cheap. Hotel probably less than 1k baht. Get a place within walking distance of the skytrain. Take the boats up and down the river when possible (good alternative to the skytrain). Patpong, Nana, Soi Cowboy...........might find "nightlife" there. Lots of good places to eat......my favorite Mexican food place is Tacos and Salsa by the Emporium (Dukes inside the Emporium is also great for a hamburger but expensive). Chinatown is fun at night............also the zoo for a break from the traffic and heat. The heat and pollution are staggering.........it is best to take the skytrain, or air-conditioned taxi, or water-taxi. If you are young, you might enjoy Khao San road..........sort of like taking a time machine back to the 60s.

If you are planning on staying more than a couple weeks, I'd suggest you see if you can find a good deal on a serviced apartment instead of a hotel.
