Why don't you wire the money to Bangkok Bank before you arrive in Chiang Mai? You'll get the best FX rate and you won't be risking your own personal safety by carrying that much money.

Bring travelers checks. They are safer and you get better exchange rates. Make sure the check are at least 500 USD value as they do charge a fee for each check.
