Because of frequent and debilittating gout attacks, I need to alkalize my blood (but not over-alkalize).

I've read the other thread on gout, but am just looking for ways to alkalize my blood.

Thanks to anyone that can offer info.

deep breathing and exercise are the most immediate blood alkalizer.

Dietary support is important also.

A good alkalizer is

large glass of clean water

juice of one lime fruit

1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

The resulting solution should be about PH 7. Depending on the water it might take some adjust of the amount of baking soda. You just don't want it too high or to low ph. Neutral PH is the easiest on the stomach and tooth enamel.

Both the lime and baking soda provide residual alkalizing support to the tissues.

Taken 3 times a day on an empty stomach and plenty of clean water the rest of the day. After a few days will help to neutralize symptoms of tissue acidosis like gout, allergies etc.

Can also use apple cider vinegar mixed with baking soda and with or without lime juice. Again aiming for a neutral PH solution for consumption. The various acids in Apple Cider vinegar help dissolve and detox gout issues.

Good luck !

You do not need to alkalize your blood.

Unless you are in critical condition with one or more organ systems failing, your blood is always alkaline within a very narrow pH range (7.35 - 7.45).

Nothing you eat or drink will alter this, altho it can alter the pH (acidity/alkalinity) of the GI tract and of the urine.

Gout is not due to the blood being acidic. Where that misunderstanding arises is that it is due to an excessively high level of uric acid in the blood and tissues. The blood remains, however, alkaline ans normal in its pH. The problem is not acidity, it is the presence of a specific chemical (uric acid) in elevated quantity in a blood of normal alkaline pH.

Uric acid is formed from the breakdown of organic compounds called purines. While found in many foods, purines are also found in all cells of the body. Thus (as with cholesterol) only a small portion of the uric acid in the blood is attributable to diet, most is formed in the liver in the course of metabolic functions. Still, that small amount if reduced does make a difference for many (not all) gout sufferers. The following links explain all this and describe foods and drinks to avoid in gout as well as foods which seem to have a protective effect. The difference between the 2 groups (foods/drinks to avoid and those that may be helpful) has nothing to do with acidity or alkalinity.

Maintaining a high level of hydration is helpful in aiding your kidneys to excrete uric acid, so drink plenty of water or fruit juices etc.

Alcohol simultaneously increases the breakdown of purines into uric acid and reduces the kidney's ability to excrete it. Beer is a double-whammy in that it also has a high purine content.

While the "alkalizing the blood" bit is nonsense, reducing the acidity of the urine may be helpful in people with high levels of uric acid as it may help prevent kidney and bladder stone formation, which people with high levels of uric acid are prone to.

In addition to the dietary recommendations you'll see in the above links, there is some evidence that supplementing with a omega 3 fish oil is helpful for gout, and of course it has other health benefits as well.

Thanks Cobra and Sheryl.

I read the links you supplied Sheryl, and I am trying learn as much as possible. What's difficult about gout, is that there is so much contradictory information, it takes time for me to find out what is medically proven and what is not.

Dear Cobra and Sheryl,

I agree with Cobra's suggestions for alkalising the system, note I do not say blood. I have measured the alkalinity of my own system with the urine, and note that baking soda increased the pH value of that urine over time. I am not in a position to comment on gout, sorry.

If the OP wishes to PM me I can find URLs where they will give you advice on the importance of acid-alkaline balance in the body (in my case measured by the urine). I believe achieving this balance has benefitted my health, and would encourage others to achieve this balance; Cobra's methods are in line with what I have learnt.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

Bill Z

Sending PM to you now, Bill Z, and thanks.

I have read that many of our western processed food can may our system acidic.

I have seen a list of foods being categorized as acidic, neutral and alkaline.

Sheryl is correct in a very narrow sense. The blood always remains in a very narrow ph range, otherwise we would die very quickly. But the rest of the body (google "body alkalinity") all too often becomes too acidic due to stress or diet. When this happens the body has to overwork itself to keep the blood in the proper ph range, leading to all kinds of health problems. Find yourself a list of acid forming vs. alkaline forming foods and be aware of what you eat. A glass of veggie or fruit juice is another good way to alkalize. Good luck.

Have your thyroid levels checked as well. Iwas having reocuuring gout attacks and I went back on Thyroid medication and it was 2 years before suffering another. The whole process starts in the liver, it stops producing a enzyme you need to break down the purines. As these convert to uric acid the kidneys are over loaded and cannot excrete enough of them and the excess falls out in your joints.

Stay hydrated, cherry juice is suppose to help, also there is a product call solray sp-13 for your liver I take this and I feel it has helped over the years. Get your thyroid checked.

Munching on antacid tablets can alkalize your blood levels, but it's not really a treatment for gout.

If the rate at which your kidneys are filtering plasma is too low, your kidney will start to reabsorb uric acid. One of the reasons your body may reduce the filtration rate in your kidneys is to conserve body fluid. So, don't give your body a reason to conserve fluid--drink plenty of water.

There are dozens of reasons the body might have high levels of uric acid. The most common are related to unhealthy diet and exercise habits. Even emotional and physical stress stimulates the release of glucocorticoids in your body. This leads to glucose production, which if chronic, can also lead to gout (among many other conditions). Start with the simple stuff if you haven't already. Aim for a healthy lifestyle. Good luck!

Yes, I'm not drinking 6 liters per day, throughout the entire day, so it's not too much.

I've changed my diet and eat a lot more fruit and have a regular exercise program I've started.

Cobra,

What do you mean by 'clean water?' Do you mean treated tap water like in the US, or do you mean bottled water?

(I am in the US right now).

Thanx.
