Classroom Games/Student Participation Ideas

Any ideas on a few simple games, something easy for students with very basic English skills. age 16-18 year olds, mixed male/female group of 20 students.

Its just a one off 4 hours session as a favour to a friend of the wife.

Trying to think of a few things to do that are fun/interesting and will get the students relaxed and enjoy themselves.

Maybe split them into groups of 4 or 5 and some kind of competition between the groups....of course main aim is to use existing English and learn a little more and gain confidence.

All sugestions greatly appreciated.

Mabey something in way of improving their english and recognition skills such as plant / animal identification. or a role play, imitate the farang is always fun for everyone. Get the groups to peform something they have seen on TV, The street etc.

role play and imitation games are always fun and get the class all involved. Hope it is fun for you.

If you're any good at drawing, have them describe two characters ('How tall is he?" "Is she fat or slim?") and then put them into a situation and have the students create a conversation, line by line.

Cut some future board into 1" squares, write a letter on each square (Same as in Scrabble).

Make up two teams and get them to sit in a line opposite each other.

Put the letters, mixed up,on the floor, at one end of the room.

Give the first player in each team, a pair of chopsticks.

Teacher says a word.

1st two students run to the letters, pick up the 1st letter of the word with the chopsticks. They then place the letter on the floor at the opposite end of the room.

They then give the chopsticks to the next member of the team, who then picks up the next letter. And so on, until the word is completed (And spelt correctly).

You can then get the students to put the word into a sentence for extra points.

I've played this game many times, with students of all ages, and it's always fun.
