Uk Passport For A Baby Born In Thailand

Featured Replies

We've a baby girl who was born in Thailand, but both of us are British citizens so getting a passport wont be a problem.

But can anyone tell me if there is a quick way to get a passport for her and has anyone any idea as to how long it will take.

Or alternatively is it viable to take her on a Thai passport without a visa but with a birth certificate or will that cause lots of trouble at Heathrow?

Thanks in advance.

Also is it easiest to get her passport in the mothers or fathers name.

You will need both Thai and British passport if you want her to return to Thailand. With only a Thai passport she might not be allowed to board the plane in Bangkok if she doesn't have a visa and without the Thai passport she will not be allowed to board for Thailand without a visa in her British passport. It is not just immigration but also the airline you will have to convince.

Contact the embassy about getting an emergency travel document if you are in a hurry to travel to the UK.

I think we need more information before anyone can answer:

1) Are you married to each other - I mean you, the father, and the mother of the child?

2) What are your respective Nationalities - is either of you a Thai Citizen (in addition to your British Citizenship which you have)?

Thanks its sounds as if its best to get to the embassy in the morning.

But are you saying if i wish to bring my daughter back to Thailand she will need a Thai passport now, as im presuming by default of her being born here and i being Thai that she would not have such problems?

Also have you any idea on timescale for if we apply to get document the quick way or do it the usual route.

No not married.

Mother is Thai but with full British citizenship and passport, father is British born.

If she enters on a British passport she will need a visa and yearly extensions and such, as immigration will regard her as a British citizen.

Applying for a Thai passport is easy, costs 1,000 baht and for 35 baht they send it to your home by EMS. Normally takes about 5 days.
