Translation Help With แล่ง

Featured Replies

I find the following in a book entitled "รู้เท่าทันกรรมชีวิตเป็นสุข" by พระอาจารย์ โอะ คเวสโก (p. 139) (quoting the words of the Buddha):

"เราจักอดทนคำล่วงเกินเหมือนอย่างช้างศึกอดทนศรที่ตกจากแล่งในสงคราม"

Which I get to be"We will endure these slanders like a war elephant endures an arrowthat falls from the quiver in war."

ButI don't understand the phrase ศรตกจากแล่งในสงคราม. The translation I can getfrom various dictionaries just doesn't make sense.

Help much appreciated

The Japanese Buddhist monk is อาจารย์มิตซูโอะ คเวสโก

To grasp the phrase, you have to know some background knowledge/context of wars/battles in India (Thailand included) in ancient time.

The warlord ( prince/king), on the elephant's neck, probably shot his arrows to his opponent, and his soldier(s) behind him sent him arrows. Due to the haste and excitement of fighting, some arrows might fall down from its quiver and hurt the elephant.

In conclusion, the arrow hurting the war elephant is compared to Lord Buddha enduring people's (non-Buddhists) slanders.

Hope this make sense to you, your correction of my Tenglish would be appreciated.
