Report: New Pakistani Taliban terrorist may seek to bomb U.S. target

2010-10-15 11:25:39 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- Senior U.S. officials are worried that a Pakistani Taliban operative may be planning to launch a new attack in the United States, months after the same terror organization tried to bomb Times Square.

Fox News broke the story on Thursday evening, citing senior U.S. officials who said little is known about the potential operative or any possible plot. "[We] don't know who it is and don't know where it is," one source told Fox News. "We know the guy's here, but don't know anything about him."

According to the report, authorities believe the Pakistani Taliban have directed a second individual to attempt another Times Square-style operation to bomb a target within the United States, but not necessarily in New York City.

While any possible attack does not appear to be imminent, a senior intelligence official told Fox New that the threat stream's lack of specificity makes it nearly impossible for the counter-terrorism community to defend against such an attack.

Authorities believe a possible plot would involve a similar mechanism and same method as used by 31-year-old Faisal Shahzad, who tried to carry out a car bombing in Times Square in May. His bomb, however, failed to detonate properly.

Fox News added that the threat appears to be credible but not specific and said authorities are "very nervous."
