Princess Diana's dress sold for $205,000 at New York auction

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- A fuchsia pink evening dress worn by the late Princess Diana was sold for $205,000 during an auction in New York last weekend, GOTTA HAVE IT Collectibles, Inc. announced on Tuesday.

The buyer, whose identity was not revealed, paid $145,000 more than the minimum bid required as twelve offers were made for the dress formerly owned by Princess Diana, who was known for her tireless work on behalf of various charities and her domestic troubles with the UK Royal family.

The extraordinary "thirties" inspired pink fuchsia pink silk dress designed by Victor Edelstein was worn by Princess Diana at the Mansion House for Help the Hospice and other high profile events, including a gala with the President of Hungary in 1992.

The dress was originally sold at a charity sale conducted by Christie's New York on June 25, 1997. Princess Diana helped to put this auction together just months before her tragic death on August 31. The sale featured only Diana's dresses and raised over five million dollars.

The latest sale took place at the huge auction held from October 6 to October 15 by the Rock & Roll Pop Culture Auction, an online site of GOTTA HAVE IT Collectibles. Other items sold during the weekend were a pair of gloves worn by Michael Jackson in the Bad album that raised $62,256, a handwritten poem draft by John Lennon was sold for $21,084 and a diamond ring of Elvis Presley was sold for $27,354.

Last June, a long-lost dress of Princess Diana was sold for £192,000 ($276,000) by a fashion museum in Chile. The dress was expected to be sold for around £50,000 ($78,500).
