Palestinian militant killed by Israeli forces in northern Gaza Strip

2010-10-27 23:07:00 GMT+7 (ICT)

GAZA STRIP (BNO NEWS) – A Palestinian militant on Wednesday was killed by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the northern Gaza Strip near the Israeli border, the government confirmed.

Two Palestinian men approached the Gaza security fence when they were spotted by IDF forces, who sent a tank to the fence to protect the Israeli border. The IDF tank then fired one shell.

One of the men was killed while the other suspect was wounded. It was later revealed that the individuals were Islamic Jihad militants who were on a Jihadist mission, an attack aimed at Israel, the Israeli government alleged.

The Islamic Jihad movement has carried out many rocket attacks that targeted southern Israel, usually without causing casualties. The rockets are fired from within the Gaza Strip, in the area controlled by the Hamas Islamist group.

The IDF also informed that overnight, five wanted Palestinian suspects were arrested by troops in the Judea and Samaria region. The detained individuals are currently being questioned.
