khall64au Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Am popping off to Ranong for the weekend.... well for Saturday night anyway. Does anybody know of fun places to go in Ranong for a bit of live music?
sua yai Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 The short answer's no. I've stayed overnight there a number of times and have been bored to death. If you find somewhere, let me know.

My advice, take someone nice with you and stay in your hotel room unless you like rain!
Axel Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Jansom Hot Spa Ranong Hotel is supposed to have the only hot spring in Thailand. Men and women separated. Ah, did you ask for entertainment?

sua yai Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 If you were thinking about Jansom, it's currently under renovation, which means that the whole frontage has gone. I heard that it was a "good time" years ago. Alternatively, there are many karaoke places that will be happy to see you part with your money. Why not try "The Honey Bear Hotel" on the Burmese mainland. Good luck.

sua yai Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 The info on Jansom is just above. Closed, for now.
Axel Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Hotspring inside the hotel was probably on my mind, or only Japanese style, I read somewhere... Anyway, time for refurbishing, the Jansom was already old when it was the Tara, years ago...
baht&sold Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Maybe try Kiwi Orchid Guesthouse in Ranong? Apparently Eugene's visiting NZ at the moment tho.
SeaVisionBurma Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Why not try "The Honey Bear Hotel" on the Burmese mainland.Good luck. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's a joke, right? There's nothing worth seeing in the Honeybear. Besides which if you go over to Kawthoung from Ranong you'll have to stay the night. There's SFA (not much) to do in Kawthoung at night unless you have some local friends. The best karaoke is probably Eugenia, a couple of miles away from the waterfront towards the airport, or The Kawthoung Motel - at the top of the hill next to the HTT (Hotels, Tours, & Travels) office. In Ranong there is a couple of decent pubs, although the names escape me. One is the Country Boy? on the main road in the middle of town where you can get a drink and listen to a band. Ask the internet shop along the same road for other recommendations. There is definitely some late-night life, mainly geared towards the Thais. but from memory the pubs were enjoyable enough. For a nice meal, get a taxi out to Pak Nam seafood restaurant (Have to go out of Ranong on the road to the Andaman Club jetty, and back along to the Paknam waterfront. Fresh seafood live in the tanks, great food, fairly cheap. Funny enough, when you arrive and sit on the deck, you realise that you are barely a couple of hundred metres across the water to the main road into Sapanphla (near the immigration office) even though its miles around by road. Finally - if you're bored scoot out to the Andaman Club. Nice restaurants, good food, and a decent bar/lounge to sit in. If you can afford to risk 10,000 baht then get a membership (you have to exchange in to cash chips, which you could then just play even money on something to cash back in) - the drinks and snacks are free in the casino while you play. Its a nice place to stay the night as well, with a decent swimming pool etc.

sua yai Posted August 5, 2005 Posted August 5, 2005 Seavisionburma, Yes, that was a joke, although I would have thought with a name like "The Honey Bear Hotel", the place would have been alive and kicking even in the land of democracy!! Again, joking. The Andaman Club's a good bet, if you've got the dosh. I've never seen much point in supporting a regime that I don't believe in - other than visa runs.
khall64au Posted August 5, 2005 Author Posted August 5, 2005 On second thoughts.... I think I'll just take a book

Tornado Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 Try a few of the bars down at the docks - very creepy indeed. As SeaVisionBurma has suggested - go over to The Andamn Club, pay the 10k (become a member) and get yourself upstairs and play blackjack. Once your a member you also get your room at 1500 per night. It is so cheap over there and even if you dont want to play cards/gamble, it still is a great place to chill out. In my opinion, it is 5 star service for a 3 star price - the Mrs and I go there often and relax near the pool, gamble etc. There is also some great blokes working there - the gaming manager is a Brit and a top bloke. Other than that and the "country bar" on the market road, there isnt much to do that Ive seen. Dance 2000 (rather crap disco) has moved to?? Great cheap food on the "market road" (close to the Country Boy Pub) is a place with a "TAXI" sign out the front... nothing flash, but great food.
sua yai Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 Yeah, Those dockside bars are a bit unnerving, even with backup and in daytime.
poorfarang Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 (edited) Allow me to chime in here. I have lived in ranong for the last 5 months. I must be crazy right Star disco is closed, country boy has actually changed into a new pub/pizza resturante thet my friend owns but it will be closed for the next 2 months. But there is still plenty to do. They are many good hotsprings to visit. They are easy to find and you can enjoy the day there. There is also a giant canyon up in the hills that is beautiful and a great swim. You will need to rent a motorbike to get there though. You can rent from a few places on the market street which will be easy to get to as well. As for night life you MUST goto TATTOO. They have a great live band and the club is really professional. Great equipment, great atmosphere. Like a BKK club. From what I read in another post you are a 17 yr old farang. There are not many farang in Ranong so you will definetly stand out in the club. There are about 10 of us that live here and you can usually find us in Tattoo Fri-sat night. If you are looking for live music without the club feel then you must check out Sir Dols. It is also on the market street, further down past the 711 near Kay Kai internet. This place is always packed full of younger thai guys about your age and features a good varaity of thai rock. It has an american pub kind of feel to it. I enjoy it actually. Other then that Ranong has hundreds of kareoke bars which im sure you are not interested in. If you looking for a place to stay I will recomend Bang San guesthouse which is right next to 711 on the market street. The rooms are 90 baht a night but arnt anything too special. For 350 baht you can go further down the street and stay at Suta House Bungalows. For 350 baht you get a really nice private bungalow, Tile floors, air con, UBC, you name it. If you want to relax stop by the Royal Princess hotel and check out there 50 baht day plan. You can use the gym, sauna, pool, and hot tub and just relax for a bit. They also have a great breakfast buffet. Be warned that Ranong is in the middle of its heavy rain season so you can expect a few hours of rain each day. This doesnt bother me but it might spoil your little holiday. If you have any other questions let me know! JC Edited August 12, 2005 by poorfarang
baht&sold Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 From what I read in another post you are a 17 yr old farang. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Erm, a rose by any other name? Methinks this may be a case of mistaken avatar identity JC. Anyways, good report, interesting to read your Ranong update, thx

But thanks for the post anyway Signor Ranong. I did stay at the guesthouse you mentioned on the market street. And... as I need to go to Ranong... yet again in a few weeks, I will def check out the Tattoo and other suggestions. Cheers The Dancing Rose (alias T& J beating the living crap out of each other until I can figure a way to get my Rose back! )
