MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann suspended for political contributions to three Dems

2010-11-06 01:08:53 GMT+7 (ICT)

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- MSNBC President Phil Griffin on Friday announced that MSNBC's anchor Keith Olbermann was suspended indefinitely without pay, after word he contributed to campaigns of three Democratic candidates.

"I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay," said Griffin in a statement.

Politico reported on Friday that Olbermann made contributions to two Arizona members of Congress and Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway, incurring in "a potential violation of NBC ethics policies."

Olbermann confirmed and defended the donations, saying that "one week ago, on the night of Thursday October 28 2010, after a discussion with a friend about the state of politics in Arizona, I donated $2,400 each to the reelection campaigns of Democratic Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords. I also donated the same amount to the campaign of Democratic Senatorial candidate Jack Conway in Kentucky."

"I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level," he told Politico.

NBC's policy states that "anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest."

Olbermann, biased? Nooo? ;)

He is soooo impartial. :D

I hear he is biased but who watches MSNBC? Nobody I know.

That's why FOX ranks #1 because nobody watches MSNBC  and you agree

Before everyone mauls Keith, please keep in mind that MSNBC has higher ethical compliance requirements than some other news organizations. Apparently, Time-Warner, Fox, US News and World Report allow donations of this kind. Don't forget that Rupert Murdoch of FOX fame gave $1million to the US Republican Governors group. It is interesting to note that this group of news organizations is often "aligned" with the conservative political spectrum. Whereas, news organizations usually labeled as "leftist" forbid political donations from their journalists. This group includes Newsweek, MSNBC, ABC, CBS and the New York Times. Something to munch on. Had Keith worked at Fox and contributed to Ron Paul, FOX would have allowed it.

It is wrong to become politically involved if one is supposed to remain a neutral reporter. Good for MSNBC for having ethics and supending this fool. It's time for others to have the same ethical practice.

Time Warner "aligned" with the consertive political spectrum

I suggest you have a look at the Time Warner public disclosure of its contributions. Go down the list. It has supported Republicans like Mark Burhalter & Jim Butterworth, Casey Cagle the Lt. Governor of Georgia calls himself a Conservative Republican. What would you call a large contribution to the Republican State Leadership Committee?

The Democrats that have received support are blue dog democrats and are hardly the darlings of the left. The one big exception was Andrew Cuomo. He was going against a loathesome Tea Party candiate. It would appear that a great many Republicans agreed with the support because Cupomo could only have obtained his large victory had Republicans voted for him.

Perhaps they know where to put their money. Can list the contributions of others say, unions? The bottom line is both sides of the political sprectrum are supported by shady carters, corporations and everything in between. THAT IS BOTH SIDES. Lawyers, Guns and Money ain't it a beautiful world. By the way I've spent my time in MOPP4 so I'm not sweating it.
