i scratched my initial knee jerk reaction in order to remain hopeful.

unfortunately, i think the issue of "face" will preclude any significant progress under normal seasonal weather patterns and it will take a mass water borne epidemic to bring resolution.

fortunately for those about to be involved in making this new public works appropriation disappear, 840mio will buy reasonable care.

On the surface, this is encouraging.

However I am confused how to respond to this one and I suspect that it is down to getting some good engineers involved.

The work so far on the drainage seems to be very effective 'where it was implemented'. After the recent rains, the areas where new drainage has been installed seem to have coped well. Areas where nothing has happened are still bad, but "so far so good".

However, other recent investments have not been so lucky.

The new tarmac on the ring road road by Chewang Post Office did not survive even one monsoon season.

Areas of the recent 'road widening scheme with drainage' are suffering from erosion already. (Who would really build a road and drainage system on sand?)

Even the steel drain covers on the ring road near Bophut are still under repair (and have been since one week after installation).

On the plus side, the BIB who built the new tarmac road from Bandon Hospital to the 7/11 at the ghost road seems to have done a good job. Maybe give him the contract?

It's not that good a job!

You can see where the new wider parts of the road are cracking & sinking already. Also, the new drainage just moves the water to the Bandon junction where it all spills out onto the road along with the sand..

Still, at least they put decent drain covers on!!

On the surface, this is encouraging.

Good point about the decent drainage covers. Those metal grates on the ring road are a bloody nightmare for motorbkes.

i know it may be odd to post about no water on a flood thread but i can not help but mention the fact that this yr we had many people with no govt water for weeks. some 8yrs ago the govt promised to manage the water storage issue, they dug a few holes some on the wrong land and still we have a drought issue on an ever growing island. I do not believe the govt will ever give samui infrastructure the attention it deserves.

Samui was a fairly hot topic on various Thai TV channels (amongst other Channel 3 and 7) last week, that may help a bit.

maybe the money for the projects go on holiday and forget how to get home back to the projects :D

i mean when i hear the words govement and projects i think of new york. i don't know why. Lots of interesting people over there :D

people that do not make mistakes and do everything correct. like govement projects they always are correct and are never wrong and there is always a big boss at the top with a fat cigar !!!

Wasn't money allocated to blacktop the entire ring road, and then only a part was completed?

I think they are waiting to finish installing the black water pipes for that section.

I don't know, i'm under the impression it was though..

I do know however that for the recent official opening of the Court just before Namuang ( if you're coming from Lamai ) & his Majety the Prince's visit to cut the ribbon, part of the Road stops just after it..

& coincidently enough, it starts 200 Yards past where the Property where he was staying in..

Make of that what you will...

don't they re do the draines every year. i see them pulling up the drains then putting them back in every year. suppose getting it right the first time to save money is out o the question.

I believe they favour the collapsing drain cover. All adds to the experience of motorbike riding on Samui. ;)
