Iran tests upgraded Russian air-defense system

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Iran has tested a domestically upgraded version of the Russian S-200 air-defense system, purchased by the country after the 1979 Islamic revolution, local media reported on Thursday.

General Mohammad Hassan Mansourian claimed that the upgraded version of the now obsolete Soviet-made S-200 has the same capability as the S-300.

"We have developed the system by upgrading systems like the S-200 and we have tested it successfully using all our potential and experience," Gen. Mansouria told Press TV.

Iran on Tuesday launched a massive exercise aimed at examining its air defense systems and planes produced by the country to prepare against any possible attacks "on public or nuclear sites."

Russia recently refused to deliver the S-300 missile system to Tehran after the U.N. Security Council approved new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.
